I'm sorry, but he really hasn't. Fifteen outstanding minutes in one game isn't "showing you are lethal," especially at this level. Failing to repeat the performance in over two years says rather more about how lethal you are (or not, as the case may be.)

If he has refused to move on today despite our efforts to sell him in a second consecutive window then the new contract makes sense. It's insurance against his value diminishing as his present contract enters its final year after this season and it gives Pards another six months to make a final decision. If Gayle doesn't underline his long-term value over the rest of this season I expect Pards will give him little choice but to move on our terms during the summer.

Plays well in the cup games Syd, none of our other non goal scoring forwards have done. I know you dislike Gayle as a player however I think your opinion is wrong.

Blinkered by your agenda Syd. He's not the Messiah by any means, but he has not contributed as little as you assert.

Burnley away and the away end carnage his second goal of the game (the very very late winner if you weren't able to make it up there though the snow) caused comes to mind.

I actually would like to see him given a go as a first-choice replacement wide forward as at least he'd show for a through ball and would be much more likely to beat one man and then do something positive like get a shot on target or pull it across rather than think about how many more tricks he could do.

What about berahinio or whatever his name is! Why ain't we offering him something ? Or offer Remy the loan he wants. We need to take some risks if we are to push for for a Europa spot as someone else said earlier somewhere this a season to do it it's so crazy we could actually push for it if we could just score goals everything else about us is good apart from goals

I seem to recall some of Steve Coppell's signings were not particularly brilliant either. Even SAF signed some real stinkers in his time. As has been said, some of Pardew's signings haven't lit up the sky but Cabaye and Souare have both been major upgrades.

Sit back and relax and a bit less bleating, please.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Personally if the only addition during this window is Adebayor then that's a really poor show.

I'd be very disappointed.

I am with you on this one. Don't want to waste money on just squad players but I do feel that there has to be some movement even if it is one or two going out!

I know we like to stick to a budget on players and not pay over the odds but if our only signing in January is Ade then it's been a very poor window for us in which clubs above and below us have improved and we have not. We clearly have areas in need of improvement or areas of weakness when key players get injured and it is a tough league this year.
We will be fine but won't be pushing for Europe this season and hopefully in the Summer we can the signings to strengthen and push us on as a club, I just feel like we could of and should have done more in this window, fingers crossed no more injuries...

I'm sitting back, relaxing with a cold drink (in the adult sense) and haven't been doing any bleating; can I have a merit point, Sir?

A lot of you sound utterly mental and sound more like teenage Liverpool fans used to spunking £20million+ on a player. I'd rather we didn't sign anyone than do a Holloway and panic buy. I think we still could do with a couple more but 'need' is a strong word. Our problem at the start of the window was misfiring strikers. The one player we have signed is a striker.

We can't sign s*** loads of players for millions just because we have injuries for a few more weeks. We should build the squad sensibly and slowly. We're in a position where players who will enhance the squad and push us up the league are f***ing expensive.

Shelvey for £12million?! Berahino bid rejected at £21million?! Lewis Grabban for £7million?! Jordan Rhodes for something like £9million? That's insane.

I'm pretty relaxed. I remember watching transfer deadline days when we had no money to sign anyone half decent.

However it's a pretty disappointing that for so long we have needed a striker and the only business we've done (So far) is buy an unfit striker on a free who's been playing street football in Africa.

What a F*CKING ABYSMAL transfer window. We might've fallen away in the league, but if ever we were going to challenge for Europe it was this season and yet it seems we've bottled it.

We'll be incredibly lucky to make the top 10 now.

I also have to question Pardew's scouts knowledge and his signings so far:

Mutch - Sh*t
Lee - Sh*t
McCarthy - Sh*t
Sako - Crocked
Wickham - Crocked AND sh*t
Souare - Unproven

Cabaye aside, that is an exceptional waste of money!

Do you even remember 2010-2011. We were in administration FFS and now you're complaining 5 years later about being safely mid table in the prem. Unbelievable.

The truth is that we don't NEED anybody. Yes we could do with improving our squad but it isn't worth overpaying to do so if the net result is finishing 9th instead of 13th. If you're not supremely confident that either the next signing will DEFINITELY get us into Europe or is an absolute bargain then it's pointless to spend now as the Jan window is typically way worse value for money than in the summer. Just accept that we're basically safe and worry about what we do to challenge for Europe next year.

Or would you rather we panic and sign somebody for the sake of it and risk ending up with another Mutch/Campbell/Kebe/that Spanish fella who did absolutely nothing and whose name I've forgotten?
