I know Australia are number one in the world and yes, they played well in the second test, but I'm really not impressed with them. England are effectively playing with only seven wickets because Lythe, Balance and Bell are s***e. Bairstow needs to come in, maybe Morgan and as I've seen somewhere else on this thread Hales. I still believe we can win the series, even after the weekends surrender because for me Australia aren't all that, just my humble opinion of course.

Chris Rogers scores 173 and Steve Smith 215 against an attack that includes bowlers rated 5th and 6th in the world and you think that "they aren't all that"

I don't think that playing Morgan will solve any problems as he is currently averaging just 10 for Middlesex and even Steven Finn has a higher batting average this season

Yes, I still think they aren't all that. If England had won the toss, I'm pretty sure we would have racked up a decent score and put them under pressure. It's only because England are playing players that aren't up to the job ie Lythe, Balance and Bell. IMHO Morgan can only be an improvement on any of those three, and Bairstow is a form player at the moment, racking up another century at the weekend, albeit in county cricket. If the top order is sorted out there's absolutely no reason why England should fear Australia.

Lyth, Ballance and Bell are not up to it.

Lyth can be replaced by Alex Hales.

Ballance can be replaced by Root moving to 3 (with Bairstow replacing Root).

Bell can be replaced by moving Stokes up the order and bringing in Rashid as an all rounder (spinner as well as a half decent batsman).

Batting order...

Cook
Hales
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Ali
Butler
Rashid
Broad
Wood
Anderson

I'd keep my eye on Cook as well... he is still getting caught playing outside his off stump to deliveries he can leave alone

That looks a better line up compared to the current one. Bairstow is in form and definitely deserves to be in the team. The collapse at the weekend was absolutely pathetic. Lythe needs to go, along with Balance and Bell.

Not sure I'd have Ali and Rashid in the same team but otherwise I agree. Lyth and Balance are out of their depth, completely scared of Johnson's pace. Bell woefully out of form...couldn't hit the ground let alone the ball right now.

I want to see guts and fight in the final 3 tests whether we win or lose them. Yesterday was a disgrace.

The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years

Spot on. Losing is part of sport, as long as guts and determination are shown it becomes a little more easy to take if we've gone down with a fight, not a whimper.

My nephew mentioned James Taylor - Notts batsman as a potential replacement.

Anyone aware of his credentials?

Excellent middle order batsman who has just scored 291 for Notts against Sussex. He has plenty of international experience playing for England Lions (including as captain) but he has probably never faced such hostile bowling as that being meted out by the pair of Mitchells before

He's a decent player with international experience. As Ian J says, he is in good form and a decent middle order batsman. It will certainly be a baptism of fire for him, but in all honesty he can only be a better option than Lythe and Balance. Move Root up the order and Taylor can go in at Root's old spot. Either way, it has to be goodbye to Lythe and Balance, and maybe Bell as well. We will see, with Bairstow and Taylor coming in.

I still can't help but think we've shot ourselves in the foot with excluding Pietersen from the line up. I reckon he would excel in these situations.

England's first test victory stung the Aussies and even with a doctored Lords pitch their performance was woeful. As an Aussie beating the old enemy (especially in cricket) is always top of my Xmas list but I'm actually hoping for a series right down to the wire like the last couple over there.
