Hamas' charter is just a bargaining chip. Like the ANC or IRA renouncing violence, Hamas will dispose of their non-recognition of Israel when they feel they are getting something in return. Israel knows this but uses it as an excuse to continue its murderous policies. Hamas might never recognise Israel its a possibility, but then Egypt etc also all refused to recognise Israel as well, and have since done so. Problem is that any path is going to be a very rocky road, as there are very powerful factions on both sides who's interest would be in maintaining the status quo (including a number of Israel's allies - Israel spends very big on defence and is one of the biggest arms importers in the world).

what the fk is happening with Iraq/IS ? Why have the allies withdrawn their military, leaving a major oil producing country at the mercy of religious extremists ? 'tis all very bewildering

This has happened the World over since we gave up the Empire. Draw your own conclusions.
I admire your enthusiasm to express your opinion Matt, but lament your laziness in informing it.

Everyone cries when Israel fight anyone but when it's Muslims and 'the people of Islam' causing blatant atrocities everyone turns a blind eye in fear of being called a racist. F*ck Palastine. F*ck Hamas. Israel standing up for themselves is 'punishment' for the atrocities your 'brothers' are causing in Iraq. Persecuting and ethnically cleansing Christians and non-Muslims. Thanks IDF for doing the world a favour.

Justice and equal rights seems to me to be a decent aim, wherever the abuses occur. Morality is not divisible simply to suit. I'm sure those who have posted, on both sides and those "in the middle", at length about abuses in the IsraeliPalestinian context will be just as outraged and posting just as much when something like this is going on somewhere else. Its not about ISIS justifying (or not justifying)Israel's actions. Two wrongs don't make a right. But what is going on with ISIS is truly despicable in anyone's language and IMHO it justifies a public level of outrage commensurate to that, certainly no less than Gaza resulted in recently. That said, it will be interesting to see if, in Paris for example, the same people who ran around shouting "Death to Israel" and "Death to Jews" and wantonly smashing up a synagogue and seemingly Jewish-owned shops a couple of weeks ago, take to the streets shouting "Death to ISIS", and the same if people condemn ISIS but turn a complete blind eye where Israel is concerned. A lesson from history. The failure of the established powers to act together against the initial wave of Arab Muslim expansion must not be forgotten. Mutual suspicion prevented any Roman/Persian co-ordinated response. Unless the USA, Europe, Russia and China can work together to stomp on ISIS, I can see the map of the world looking very different in 30 years time. Edited by Red-Blue-Yellow (08 Aug 2014 12.30am)
