It's interesting to see the club collecting for the treatment of Leukaemia, but what about something just for Geoff? I think his shirt should be revived and his old number retired in his honour. There should be some sort of collection to get him a commemorative gift and then we could all see him come to SP to collect it! Thats a brilliant idea. Just like we did to complain to Palace about no announcement, we should all email the club with Glazed's idea. I'm doing mine now. Here's a link to get y'all started:

I think that is a really nice and touching gesture but what worries me is how Geoff would take that. It's almost as if we're saying there won't be a happy ending here so lets give the guy some kind of honour. Maybe that's just me I don't know but that's how I would feel so please don't shoot me down for saying this. At the moment he doesn't need our sympathy but our support and I'm positive there will be a happy ending because Geoff is a proven fighter full of effort and determination, so for now I think we should just continue the messages of support, let him know that we're 100% with him and combined with the fact that we collected money for treatment of Leukaemia he already knows how much the fans of this club love and respect him.

Geoff Thomas epitomized the fighting spirit of the Palace clubs of the early 90s. What they lacked in pure talent they more than made up for in effort. The goal he scored against Cambridge in the 1990 FA Cup Qf was typical. A right footed weed killer that will never be considered elegant but did the job. I'm positive Geoff will come through this as well.

As far as retiring Number 8, this is an American tradition that really doesn't translate to football. Remeber, back then there were no squad numbers, just 1-11 for the starters and 12 & 14 for the subs. I think a ring of honor, which many NFL teams do, is more appropriate. As wel as Geoff, former Palace stars such as Byrne, Jackson and others could also be honored.

He's not dead for Christ's sake! Why retire his shirt, if his fighting spirit lives on, then so should the shirt. In Aussie Rules young players consider it an honour to wear a champion's old shirt/number. I would kill to get Geoff's shirt if was a youngster and that player had epitomised everything I loved in the great game. As long as Geoff is alive and fighting so should his shirt be, and he will be for a very long time.

SHirts can be retired when a player stops playing for a team and retires from the game.
