You wonder how far this will go.

Putin won't stop of his own accord. He will keep the Russian military going (however long it takes) to secure Ukraine. If it stalls, we may see increasingly destructive weaponry used, perhaps some of it banned from warfare use.

Sanctions will impact Russia, but likewise Russia has a strong hold on world reserves of oil and gas and a big contribution to world arable farming produce.

Citizens all around Europe are going to feel the financial pressure on the cost of living, probably for many years.

NATO will no doubt have formulated plans to deal with most foreseeable scenarios, such as rising inflation, increasing military aid, and ultimately war with Russia.

There's going to be no 'winners' in this one.

On a slightly lighter note, I do feel a tad sorry for Her Maj' this year. Her Jublee year. Brexit and Covid impacts still being felt, Prince Andrew folds in the game of 'Name-a-Nonce', and now conflict in Europe means almost zero chance of a military trooping and public celebrations.
I did buy a Jublee mug, and I think it was made in China. At least they seem to be doing well out of things

I agree with this. I wonder if Putin has even considered what he will do once it’s over? His country will be something of a pariah state, he’ll be accused of war crimes and what will he do with a country whose people hate him? I’m not convinced that his strategists have thought this through to its ultimate end. Or maybe they have, given that theirs is a country of chess.
One thing is for sure - he has shown his forces are not as good as expected - which is very dangerous with his index finger hovering over a red button.
As you say, I cannot see any winners here. I suspect we all stand to lose rather a lot, to varying degrees.

PS - am I the only one that shouts ‘please, please don’t talk’ every time Liz Truss appears?

Truss is truly dreadful, she stands out even amongst her peers which is saying something.

We always knew the Russian equipment is poorly maintained and often old. But there is shedloads so they still have the whip hand.

Apparently Putin remains hugely popular in Russia, I don't know if the majority of Russians realise what is going on. And if they do they ain't saying.

Surely pork markets takes the biscuit.

Or should I say cracker

Especially when you are aware that Truss sold out UK agriculture just to get deals done in an effort to appear to be achieving a Brexit benefit

- Shutdown of multiple TV stations, for the crime of addressing that this war is taking place

- New 'fake news' laws (up to 15 year in prison) in a country where this is a 'special military operation' not a war

- Blocking of access to twitter + facebook

- Arrests of thousands of peaceful protestors (including children)

To me this all suggests that many are intentionally left blind to the realities of what is happening, and are severely punished if they do recognise and criticise it.

This from today is telling too:

Quote TikTok suspends livestreaming and new content in Russia

Video app TikTok says it is suspending livestreaming and new content to its video service in Russia while it reviews the safety implication of a new law which threatens to jail anyone the authorities deem to have spread "fake" news

Literally broadcasting live, factual events has, in Russia, become 'fake news' punishable by jail time. The fake news mantra is often used to discredit what is inconvenient rather than untrue. What's happening is Russia in a glaring example.

Phew, glad it’s not just me on Truss!
He may be popular (or is it fear) in Russia but there are 40m Ukrainians who will despise him and he will have that and a smashed up country to contend with.

Sadly, though, I can only see this going one way.

To me, this needs a chat between the US, EU and China. We need to strive to ensure that this does not happen again, that boundaries are set and borders are respected. This is a pipe dream, though, for a variety of reasons.
First things first though, try to de-escalate this current situation but God knows how that will happen and, whilst I sincerely hope I’m wrong, I reckon it’s gone too far.

These from yesterday. There are tens of videos like these every day, and also of what are clearly shelled and destroyed civilian areas. Posted just in case anyone again attempts to claim otherwise.

Further, unfortunately graphic, verification and detail of the aforementioned mortar attack on evacuees [Link]

A mother, teenage son and young daughter lie dead besides their severely injured Father and small dog in a carry case. Could there be a more cowardly act. Posted to refer back to, in case the 'civilians aren't targetted' claims turn and to highlight the realities of what the Ukrainian people are facing.

This can only end from inside. Either the soldiers mutiny and turn around, the public actually beleive what is happening or putin dies by foul means or natural.

Did you read the story that in the one city that has been taken by the Russians that they organised a distribution of food and other essential supplies, with their TV cameras ready to record the event for broadcasting back in Russia, showing grateful Ukrainians after their "liberation".The Ukrainians outwitted them. Played along, turned out and lined up, but as the cameras rolled started chanting in Russian that they "didn't want their frigging grub". I wonder if it was broadcast!

Can't say it surprises me. Despite Orwellian efforts to hide and criminalise the truth, a great many Russians are speaking out despite personal cost..

Quote Nearly 4,000 people have been detained at anti-war protests across Russia on Sunday, rights groups and Russian authorities say.

Some 1,700 people were detained in Moscow alone, the RIA news agency reported, citing the interior ministry.

The OVD-Info rights group says detentions took place in 53 cities.

Although protests have become increasingly restricted in recent years, numerous rallies have taken place across Russia since the invasion.

In the last 11 days, more than 10,000 people have been detained at protests, OVD-Info says.

I'm not really someone who changes their flag myself but in the spirit of virtue signalling I thought I best do some kind of small heroic act in defiance of evil Russia.

I decided to play the Russian anthem at full blast and I can assure you that during it I made several audible sighs and at one point I even shouted 'No' loudly, booed and hissed and even wagged my finger in a manner which an observer could have said was in a semi aggressive style.

For anyone who wants to join me in this response to the war here is a link to the anthem so that you can make a small difference as well.

I have watched two very interesting videos on YouTube. Both give an insight into Putin's mind and where his vulnerabilities are.

The first with Garry Kasparov, the chess champion turned politician who knows Putin well. He contemplates the end game.

[Link]

The second is with Bill Browder, who was at one time the biggest investor in Russia, exposed large scale corruption and became Putin's biggest enemy. It was the murder of his lawyer, by Putin's regime, that has produced the "Magnitsky" legislation in various countries, named in his honour.

What is particularly interesting is that Browder is addressing Parliament about which oligarchs need to be targetted and how.

[Link]

None of this will give me a good sleep. We are in uncharted waters!
