If we all lived in overcrowded houses or were here for a few years it would be great, but we’re not. This is our home and it has to work as a home. There are other ways to run a country and not this way. The longer this goes on the more difficult it is to reverse, relying on the immediate tax gain, at a cost to the longer term health and prosperity of the country and citizens. Even more pubs closing is another downside. Invite millions of more intelligent Mediterranean graduates tomorrow. The views would soon change. I've said it before and I will say it again. We should import our politicians and civil servants from Eastern Europe. They're cheaper and will work harder. Let's see if the establishment is still as keen on open migration!

How appropriate. The Brexit thread hits page 1066
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

Edited by Penge Eagle (16 Nov 2018 12.44pm) I remember those days, I can only assume you do not. Visas, long passport queues and most tricky of all currency controls. You could take limited cash with you Getting to work was difficult and mostly those I remember doing so were au pairs. As you will know, getting to work in the US for any prolonged period is tricky. Sure it can be done but not easily. Presumably it will be like that.

To visit the US for up to 3 months requires an ESTA which can be bought online and lasts for two years. Cost $14 I think. Not difficult. Working in the US is trickier but so it should be. Apply online and then the only crappy bit was sitting in the US embassy for 2-3 hours to get approved which took 2 minutes. My media visa was for 5 years. Again, it's not a big deal. Does long queues at immigration put people off from visiting or working in the US? NO.

It took me months of trekking from office to office and while working night shifts. You still have to satisfy the checks of the country you are going to, but FOM is simple compared to what existed previously and effective for the unemployed to move to high employment areas. That is all it is, the market working.
