I'm afraid Steely that if you look into the past and Police numbers as a percentage of population we had far far lower crime and less Police. The cultural change from a socially conservative culture to a liberal one and lower trust in society created by immigration has resulted in a situation where Police numbers are ridiculously high compared to the past because crime has risen to a similarly ridiculously high level. You point at Police numbers! I put it to you that the society your approved politics creates has required an ever higher need for them. Just look at Police numbers in areas where diversity is high and compare the crime rate with areas where diversity is very low....Cornwall might be a useful comparison. I put it to you Steely that you point at the symptoms but not the disease. As for crime and Khan, he argued to end stop and search and created a culture within the Met that is scared to enforce crackdowns because of the 'racism' chorus from his administration. It's no different to why Islamic gangs were allowed to rape mainly white and some Sikh girls for decades with only the lightest of Police or social services interest. If you are genuinely interested in lower crime perhaps you should recognise the real problems behind its increase. Edited by Stirlingsays (24 Feb 2023 2.36am) Spot on, excellent analysis.

It was a society that policed itself on minor issues to a great extent, so there was far less need for formal policing. Simple, effective and kept the law out of it.

I grew up on a poor council estate but it was working class proud. There was never any trouble as the adults would tell us kids off and wouldn't be shy in telling our parents who would blame us and not the adult. That sort of local policing by the community has long gone.

That sort of local policing by the community has long gone. It pains me to say because I didn't like it when I was young but I think it's about respect. When I was a kid people had more respect for others' property and other people generally, not just figures of authority like teachers or policemen. Why? Partly fear of the consequences but more generally because that's just the way it was.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

However, I'd also append the fact that many people today don't bother reporting crime because they don't consider it worth the hassle or think it'll won't be resolved or treated seriously enough.

The recent increase in knife crime in London has very little to do with Mr Khan, or his predecessor, because the mayor has no influence over police funding or deployment. The fact that the current shower of s***s we call our government has cut 20,000 police personnel and their funding, is the real issue here. They have promised to recruit 20,000 more police officers, and they're acting like they're doing us a favour in correcting their crass cock up. But some people just want a chance to have a pop at a prominent Muslim, to point out his faults and flaws, even if they're not his, and they’re happy to do so without fact checking, or dishonest enough to check the facts and repeat the lies anyway. Sadiq Khan is not responsible for the increase in crime, the Tories are. 'Tough on crime and its causes' - bring back Labour. Given that Khan sacked the previous Commissioner I don't know how you can spout this nonsense!

Tough on crime and its causes was successful perhaps that is why in a generation becoming used to failure, we are not rushing to restore it. Vital links to young people and the community and intelligence gathering were lost to austerity, there is far more to it than front line policing.
