And Mr Stirlings point that no-one fights for the UN HMMM! My father represented the UN during the Congo crisis of 1961, one of a hotch-potch of soldiers from non aligned countries that were sent to establish a peace in central Africa.

Well, maybe your father saw himself as 'fighting' for the UN but he's more the exception than the rule.

My family is closely connected to the military since WW2, specifically the 17/21 Lancers before they became apart of the Royal Armoured core. It's been the norm for males down two of our family lines to join up... usually since the seventies choosing that regiment, which one of my uncles was in during WW2. My eyesight was the only thing that kept me out of it.

My older brother has been on several peace keeping missions and I can ensure you.....It's the same as it ever was. He and his unit regard themselves as very much British soldiers not UN soldiers as such...It's a role they are performing. What they are doing is fulfilling a commitment made by their government....Their paymasters.

The structure is the same, your commanders at unit level are the same....The UN are a political/human rights institution....I know those lefties who hate nationalism or flag waving don't like it but the reality is that no one 'fights' for the UN.....Your frigging 'peacekeeping soldiers' are paid by their own Governments...Well, the western ones are.

You are quite correct as I was serving with my commando unit in Cyprus when turkey invaded the island so the UN decided to take the troubles on board...All we did was take off our green berets and put on UN blue ones and carried on doing just the same job as we had been doing before. This happend twice to my unit on two different occasions. The reason we changed into the UN beret was to show that we were acting on behalf of the UN and under a resolution number......This is the Norm in these curcumstances.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

B+llocks.

She's responsible for 75 billion coming back to this country in EU rebate.

She's earned it.

I don't know if you've noticed, but I stopped replying to your posts when we both got yellow carded for arguing a while ago.

In the interests of us both remaining card-free, could you please extend me the same courtesy.

Thank you.

No.

I'm responsible for my words and you yours.

I'll reply to what I want, that's the point of a forum.

So were you engaging in actions under UN resolutons and rules of engagement, or British Army ones? I do the same job pretty much everywhere I go, but I do work for different companys in the process.

Also presumably any british soliders shooting at people who weren't seconded to the UN would have been in a lot of trouble?

Don't know if this has been posted, but here's what £10m could buy you apart from Thatcher's funeral:

* 272 Secondary School teachers for a year
* 322 nurses
* 269 paramedics
* 320 firefighters
* The state's contribution to the monarchy for 3 months
* 7,042 families' annual energy bills
* 25,773 families' annual water bills
* 177,777 Jobseekers' Allowance
* Two years foreign aid to Iraq
* 2 1/2 Leverson inquiries
* Two weeks BBC World Service
* 152 MP's salaries
* 49 days UK forces ops in the Falklands
* 11,111 free public health funerals
* 16,949,152 pints of milk
* 1,199 Students' annual tuition fees
* Fly everyone in the Falklands to London and pay for them to go up the Shard - 3 times over

Are they hot nurses and naughty teachers?

Well the DVLA made £10million by illegally selling drivers' names and addresses to parking and clamping companies. That's paid for the funeral.

Interesting to note the Left are usually happy for lavish State spending (in the billions), but not in this instance...

Also, the Thatcher funeral details was approved by Blair and Brown years ago.

Well it's more about disputing the fact the Tories are using it for political gain.

PS I wonder how much air time on the news Gordon Brown will get when he pops his clogs?

That wasn't the point he was making.

This whole UN, British soldier debate has kind of run its course.
