I kind of understand the idea of people going off to fight Jyhad to 'liberate' muslim nations, such as Syria etc, but not really how blowing up a bus in London fits with any kind of strategy or goal. I believe it's about revenge, and bringing the war to our streets. The thinking goes, "you come to Muslim countries [Iraq, Afghan etc] and kill our civilians, so we're going to come to your country and kill your civilians, so you know what it's like for us."
It defeats the argument. Those that are doing it are warped and egged on by spineless preachers who want the stupid and/or gullible to do their killing for them.

As I said before, a lot of his is unpalatable to us but you and I have not spent our lives in Israel, not known the constant threat of rockets, kidnappings or suicide bombs. We haven't lived through the Intifada's. The kind of aggression dealt out to the ordinary people of Israel by Hamas is defining the action carried out by the IDF. It is very easy to criticise when you have not been subjected to life in war zone.

The guy is a nutter. He has nutters who support his point of view. This link is interesting (from a pro-Israeli source) in indicating 77% of Israelis oppose reoccupying Gaza and 23 % (and I agree they are nutters and too many ) support it. Normally, I try to post a rational point/argument. But, there are exceptions...frankly, this guy (and his followers, thankfully not anything like a majority), makes me simply want to p.ke, and I cringe at the shame his biblical inspired ultra right wing insanity will inevitably bring onto all Israelis and, in some eyes, Jews generally. Nice own goal, you utter d..k he.d! Not in my name! Edited by legaleagle (04 Aug 2014 10.49pm) Edited by legaleagle (04 Aug 2014 10.50pm)

Weirdly though Iraq was a remarkably secular country, with no love for Islamist movements, and a big hard on for quasi-leftist pan-Arabism. Somehow I see it more as exploited stupidity of a kind of middle class privileged Muslim guilt. Somehow I suspect many travelled out for training, were regarded as generally no use, and then sent back to 'strike a blow' in the UK (i.e. a liability to be disposed of). None of the cells seem to have been very well organised, resourced, well thought out or equipped.

Why bring them up as some kind of reasonable and rational mitigating circumstance with regard to Israeli government action today? It's "unpalatable" to you what is happening you have just said. Is it really? So why the mollifying when it comes to the IDF Mr Contradictory_Himself? Smoke and mirrors. Again. Edited by Kermit8 (04 Aug 2014 11.39pm)

That's what I don't get about Islamist Terrorists, the indiscriminate carnage against people who might otherwise be sympathetic to your cause. I get the idea of targeting government, institutions of government, politicians even the military and organisations implicit in 'oppression', what I don't get is how just killing a train full of people actually works towards anything except an escalation. But isn't that the basis of all terrorism, Islamic or otherwise? We could talk about the IRA, ETA, the ANC the Black September movement and many others. Terrorism is not conventional war. History suggests that it doesn't have a direct effect, but it does have an indirect impact in terms of bringing people to the negotiating table. For the most part the IRA weren't that indiscriminate - the majority of targets were military, government and infrastructure. Similarly ETA, both were part of a greater political struggle. Civilians were targets but the campaigns weren't entirely about just killing people in the UK. Similarly like Hijackings people were killed, but the purpose behind those attacks wasn't to kill as many people as possible, it fitted into a greater whole. I kind of understand the idea of people going off to fight Jyhad to 'liberate' muslim nations, such as Syria etc, but not really how blowing up a bus in London fits with any kind of strategy or goal.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand! My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right. (Member of the School of Optimism 1969-2016 inclusive) |
