Do you lot have any idea what the minimum wage for an under 18 is? No one is going to be getting £11 an hour for picking fruit lads. Yeah it's £4.20 an hour and they'd earn double that, or more.

For part time employment they could try for Shop work: if not supermarkets, places like bakeries generally have Saturday staff/holiday relief workers garden centres cafes/restaurants leaflet distribution or even a good old fashioned paper round. They won't all be advertised, and sometimes you have to go hunt for them, but there are chances out there for those who really want them. Supermarkets, local shops and garden centres in London will all have numerous applicants from adults with retail/hospitaty experience, most of whom are happy to accept zero hour contracts - why would they hire a 16 year old over them? It’s a nice idea, but the reality is there is just not the same opportunity for kids to work these days - I got a job on the turnstiles at Selhurst at 16; I referred my nephew who is a similar age recently and he couldn’t even get a conversation with anyone at the club. I agree there are still opportunities for some, but it’s extremely limited, and I think it’s really weak to make out it’s in some way related to mobile phones and social media usage. Do paper rounds still exist? Genuinely curious, but I can’t imagine there’s much of a demand for hand delivered papers these days.

We are in the manure without a shovel. Shall we have a little bet on how long it will take for chlorinated US chickens to hit our supermarket shelves after the deed is finally done?

I wouldn't want to grind your gears offering an opinion now. Your hubris, well anyone's hubris where they regard themselves as such an authority that others need to shut up, deserves poking fun at.

I'm pretty sure they would if the parcity of labour is as great as they profess it to be as it's still more than 50% less than they're paying, if not close to 100% less, according to the claimed rate of approx £15 per hour by those bemoaning the potential shortfall of EU workers. The same would be possible in the construction industries too (amongst countless others no doubt) were it not for the ridiculous hurdles, and over zealous regulation enforced on people, where they could both earn and learn as they used to be able to.

I didn’t say you should shut up because I know everything Stirling. I believe I pointed out that you were out of your depth.

After reading the posts here on picking fruit and veg best to get prepared. You will need an industry standard can opener and have a few spares as you will be living on processed peas spam and beans after March 19th. Return of the old kitchen cupboard to store it all just like they did in 1940. Buy Rio Tinto zinc shares now......
