They don't have to make up the entire workforce but for a month and half, at least, in peak season they could provide a glut of additional labour. Or 10 weeks of the 6 month season including other holidays. And they can always reintroduce the seasonal agriculture scheme that was only dropped 5 years ago due to the availability of EU labour. How about offering students a discount off their tuition fees as well as pay from the farmer.

What about when they're at school and it needs picking? Good luck getting young people to do that for a pittance as well. I did it for one day when I was at school and that was more than enough. Fairy

A far more worthwhile exercise than simply handing them someone else's money! What job opportunities do you think a 16 year old in London has? Will be interested to hear your suggestions.

In true Brexit fashion we will become great again by having no fresh fruit and veg, there vis nothing wrong with processed peas. According to Mrs Leadsom who knows all about farming, the solution is for farmers to by modern kit. They apparently, have never thought of that and have not identified the suitable machinery, but what would they know. After we have sent Jonny Foreigner EU worker home we will import slaves from Africa. No problems at all.

There are many reasons why the profitable farms - agribusinesses - can be long-term harmful. For example, by demanding super sized fields there are few hedgerows and the wildlife suffers. Try visiting Eastern Germany and seeing how many birds there aren't in the countryside. This is a whole lot more complex than making widgets. In its wisdom, in any case, Government has decided that subsidies will be phased out in the UK between 2021 and 2027, thereby making it uneconomic against the subsidised farms in other countries. The EU, on the other hand, has no such plans. So small farms die, agribusiness is the only way forward and productivity levels will suffer overall. Likely the soil will degrade as it is over-farmed too. So look forward to massive fields wherever feasible and lots of low quality imports from the other side of the world. I would guess the EU will aim to sell internally, no point in going through the hassle of selling to the UK. Edited by Mapletree (26 Oct 2018 6.32pm)

For part time employment they could try for Shop work: if not supermarkets, places like bakeries generally have Saturday staff/holiday relief workers garden centres cafes/restaurants leaflet distribution or even a good old fashioned paper round. They won't all be advertised, and sometimes you have to go hunt for them, but there are chances out there for those who really want them.

Do you lot have any idea what the minimum wage for an under 18 is? No one is going to be getting £11 an hour for picking fruit lads.
