However, I Just can’t see anyone being able to make our present 11 / squad any better than Hodgson? If we can’t bring any additional players in only Hodgson in my opinion is able to keep us up. But staying up is not a definite even if Hodgson stays? Ayew and Olise coming back soon will hopefully be the reason we stay up? Then, a new manager/team will have a bloody hard job ahead as we will go down next season without major incoming quality players and a change in playing style?

In the PV era of discontent, Wilf had the ear of Parish and probably relayed the feelings in the dressing room. I wonder if Parish has the pulse of the dressing room this time? If not, maybe there is not enough discontent yet to force his hand. If we beat Sheffield (50/50 probability?) Roy will stay. I never understood the strategy of investing in the academy and a pipeline of talent and then appointing Roy, albeit only for one season. Such an incongruent proposition that had risk written all over it based on Roy's previous stint, before he came in to replace PV last year. I wonder if anyone has the pulse of the dressing room. The captain arguably doesn't deserve a place in the 11. The Vice Captain (Guehi) isn't much of a talker. Hughes seems to shout a lot when someone else screws up, but unfortunately he does more than his own share of errors which undermines it. Tomkins should be nowhere near the first team. Andersen puts out an instagram post that says 'trust us we're working as hard as we can' after he's been arguing with Rice in the opposition penalty area whilst Arsenal break for the 3rd goal. Listened to Pulis on Ben Foster's podcast recently. He was asked who his favourite players to have ever worked with were, and one on a very short list was Jedinak. This team is devoid of players like that. Somehow we have the 5th oldest squad in the league, and are devoid of leadership. The starting 11 hasn't replaced McArthur. Zaha isn't there to tell everyone else he's too good for them. Who is getting after people to keep the standards high?

I fell into the Hodgson out camp yesterday. I wrote on the Parish out thread recently about being realistic with our ambitions given our income vs other teams. I still stand by that. What is alarming for me is the continuing coaching issues. 1) Set Pieces. At Premier League level, if you're doing well or poorly it's simply a matter of coaching. We have international goalkeepers, international centre halves. Arsenal yesterday demonstrated what can happen when everyone has a job against a team where no-one has a job. Our net goals from set piece this season must be appalling. 2) Goals scored. Sod the injuries - Luton have now scored more than us this season. We have failed to score in 40% of our home games this season, only Everton and Burnley are worse. In Everton's defence, after their first 3 games they've only failed to score in the United defeat and a 0-0 draw with Villa. 3) General work rate. Hughes floats that crap cross into Raya's hands yesterday and the lack of movement is astounding. When Raya catches it, freeze it. Schlupp is staring at him dejected, with Trossard next to him. When Raya releases the ball, Schlupp is still staring at the Arsenal goal, Trossard is 35 yards up the pitch in a full blown sprint. He scores. Odegaard, who was also next to Schlupp, is next in line to score. As Jesus gets the ball, Schlupp finally turns around. Turns out he was waiting to console Andersen who ALSO hadn't moved because he was squaring off with Rice. That's sod all to do with the board. Everton, Luton, Wolves... they don't concede that goal. Their managers demand a work rate that means that doesn't happen. 4) Bringing on Tomkins to play alongside Ahamada against a fresh Martinelli? Give me a break. I have no idea what the point of that was but it turned a bad defeat into an embarrassment and may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. That decision got exactly what it deserved. Had we played another 5 minutes God knows how many he'd have scored. We've conceded 5 awful goals. Poor set piece work, poor transition and work rate, poor in game management. None of that has anything whatsoever to do with finances and player quality. That is all coaching. Even worse, it's meant to be Hodgson's strengths. If he isn't delivering the goals, AND isn't delivering defensive stability ... what's he offering? This is an excellent post, I also liked the post on another thread from 2013 about Roy too, explaining that he has never stayed anywhere long because of the one dimensional, singular attribute that he brings as a manager. The fact that any manager of his stature and experience does not have a clue about attacking and set pieces is quite astounding. It's more than half the game. I'm very much willing to believe the assertion that he does neither in training as the results would evidence this. Post Vieira, I was of the opinion that Roy was the antithesis of the young manager trying to play free-flowing, expansive football, therefore fitting to come in. We became a shambles under PV as nobody looked as though they knew what they were doing. Thus, the balance between that and Roy's regimented style evened out to something resembling effective football. The pendulum has fully swung now though. Beyond keeping shape during a game we have no idea going forward, cannot utilise set pieces and are even falling apart defensively. We've become an unattractive club both through our incredibly boring, bereft-of-inspiration football and in our inability to provide anything close to a case for players to join us. The only thing that would align with Roy's style is if we went with a Peter Taylor-esque signing of journeyman who've lost all sense of ambition and inclination to express themselves on a football pitch. I held loyalty to Roy, not because of any 'Croydon' or 'Palace, one of our own' connection but because despite it being incredibly unattractive he got the job done in keeping our skint, muddled together squad in the PL. The fact it was so incredibly boring was of little consequence to me. The pure fact now however is he is no longer delivering that. So, for the same reason, I hope we move on from his as soon as possible and God forbid, I (and I'm guessing many others) might actually look forward to our games and hold something constituting hope for the future. Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I think there are plenty of managers out there who could. Everton looked like the worst team in the league until Dyche took over. He would turn our team around in a few weeks.

I have a vision of Mr Hodgson at the Sheff Utd game staring at banners displayed at the Holmesdale ! PS : I have had a number of texts and calls basically asking the question "Will Mr Hodgson be in charge for the Sheff Utd game?"

The only thing that goes against Dyche is he fiddles with his nose during the game, has anyone else noticed him. Give it a rest man!

Edited by Willo (22 Jan 2024 3.41pm) Wilder must surely have thought to himself, "Palace are at sixes and sevens when a ball from a wide area is knocked into their box" and will proceed accordingly.
