Of course, it’s fantastic news, but does anyone else think this deflects from the lack of activity in the market place? We have lost 4 senior players and bought 1 oven ready player and 1 injured kid.

It’s hardly a wonder window so far.

In my opinion we are in a new transition period in the transfer market that clubs are trying to adjust to. Prices have gone through the roof because of the Saudi League, Chelsea (part owned by Saudi’s) Newcastle (Owned by Saudi’s).

Clubs have been getting massive prices for players so others are holding out for these fees also, but there will be panic stations when we get to the last week of the window and they haven’t sold which is where I believe we will do our business.

I'm ok with it. The players we let go had slim to little impact on our season last year (except Wilf). So I can live with them not being replaced.

Lerma will play every game and have a HUGE impact on the team. Lets hope Franca can too

Whilst our squad is smaller at present, quality is more important than quantity.

Lerma's arrival isn't just about one good player coming in, it has, as Hodgson has said, allowed the attacking players more freedom and options in the knowledge we have a strong double pivot in front of our defense.

Once Olise is fit again, he and Eze will have even more licence to do their stuff and I can see Edouard benefitting too and hitting the double figure mark in goals.

If we get the two incomings Parish is hoping will arrive this month and keep our other stars then this will have been a good window IMO.

And there's still the unknown quantity called Franca.

I think this has been lost in the euphoria around the Olise new contract.
At the moment for me the priority would be another keeper capable of playing in the first team if Guiata departs.
We don’t have that at present and I note what happened to Leicester at the beginning of last season after Schmeichel departed.
They used Ward, who clearly wasn’t good enough, and never really recovered as the season progressed.
An injury/suspension/ loss of form to Johnstone creates a problem.
We also need another forward and a full back who could play on either side would also be useful.
Parish said we might look to do ‘one or two things’ next week so let’s see, but please- not Matthews as second keeper.

We have 3! Johnstone, Matthews, Whitworth

Upon reflection. Makes absolute sense for Olise to stay at least another year. Recover from injury and he is straight back into the team. Sign for Chelsea while injured and you are forgotten and shipped out on loan next year.

I think next year he will go but at a much higher price. We should already be looking for the replacement. Perhaps Franca is that.

I think I would take Hodgson’s view that our squad is currently too thin over some of the opinions on this board. We are short at GK, CH, LB, RB, CF and wing. Apart from that everything is fine!

Start of last season we had Guaita Johnstone and Butland before he disappeared on loan and then permanent deal. An injury to Johnstone this year and we will be looking to a big step up from Matthews and as good as Whitworth might become he didn’t look that great last time he played.

I can see a goal keeper as being a priority if Guaita is out the door.

Has Hodgson said that or is it just your opinion?

Hodgson said the squad was thin. Did I say he said more than that?

The Guaita situation makes all this difficult as nothing can be done whill he is still here refusing to play.

How many defenders to you want? We have 4 solid centre backs. We have 2 right backs and admittedly we could do with another left back. Clyne has played left back and Schlupp can cover in an emergency. It’s forwards the club is in need of…im sure we will sign a wide forward before the end of the window. And I’m sure we will sign a GK as well.

Why is it that players like Tomkins, Ward and Clyne who more or less everyone thought were too old a year ago are now ok again for top class PL football? Clyne is not a left back, Mitchell has shown his fragility positionally as a defender, Richards is a good player but seems to pick up a lot of injuries as does Tomkins who is too old for this level.

So when you ask how many do I want, I want a decent right back who can at leat keep up with a winger pace wise, a decent left back and a younger centre half. If you don’t think we need those players then that is your choice but I don’t agree with it.
