Offside offence interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or or gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has: A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent. A ‘save’ is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area). In situations where: a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent's progress (e.g blocks the opponent) the offence should be penalised under Law 12 Edited by Willo (27 Jan 2022 2.17pm) This proves it was offside, thanks! He impacted Mitchell’s ability to play the ball by jumping in front of him

Why Willo has to be so antagonistic about it is beyond me. Edited by Phil’s Barber (27 Jan 2022 3.06pm)

Clearly this would have been examined as part of the normal post-match forensic analysis of the officials performance. Quote : "Each Premier League match is evaluated by a former senior referee who scrutinises every decision using the match footage and event data to measure the officials’ technical performance. Former players and managers (Match Delegates) assess the accuracy and consistency of decision-making and their management of the match" Well we had better hope who ever that senior former ref is , has a better grasp of a basic rule than either the line assistant, Friend, or Pawson. As this match contained at least two more possible match altering contentious decisions, and any number of lesser poor decisions being made.

Edited by Phil’s Barber (27 Jan 2022 3.06pm) We all take Willo's bait (I am now). He is like Comical Ali during the war to get rid of Sadaam, constantly telling reporters that Iraq were winning, even when US troops could be seen in the background. Comical Willo

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a whistle-blower somewhere in the ranks that get to see that post match analysis report & it was leaked. Originally posted by Putitout

Further to my previous post, here is a the relevant question and answer from the IFAB website regarding Liverpool’s second goal. The FAQs give guidance on a variety of scenarios regarding the offside law - the one below describes the exact situation which occurred on Sunday. I repeat that it is shocking that top referees do not actually know the laws of the game and how they should be interpreted. An attacker (Team A) in an offside position and a defender (Team B) jump for a header and compete for the ball. Neither of them touches the ball which goes to another Team A player who is in an onside position and scores. What is the correct decision? The referee awards an indirect free kick to Team B. It is an offside offence because the attacker clearly attempted to play the ball which was close and this action impacted on the opponent. (The International Football Association Board -IFAB - is the law-making body of football)

Comical Willo Whilst I am reluctant to say it, the place was far calmer and had a much more relaxed atmosphere during the self imposed hiatus. Less argumentative, less antagonistic, less pretentious waffle and just all in all a better place to be, which in turn lead to more sensible discussions, without derailment and without one persons self importance taking over. I knew it wouldn’t last and sure enough it hasn’t

I knew it wouldn’t last and sure enough it hasn’t I am tempted to respond to the specific risible accusations, however I have no desire to de-rail this thread. In the interests of HOL the debate should centre around the matter under discussion and not veer into the realms of personal attacks.
