True story. I was on holiday in Ibiza wandering down a road full of restaurants behind a family all decked out in shell suits. The Mother, having perused another menu, announced to the rest of the family that she was fed up with looking at all this foreign muck and she was "off to find something English, like a Chinese" Made me laugh, but I remember something similar with spaghetti! Its weird that after just a few generations, we consider so many foods to be British. I dont agree that wd dont have our own cuisine here, because the old working class came up with genuinly creative food to work around certain problems (cornish pasties, scotch pies and local variations were designed so you had a good way to hold food if your hands were filthy) and over time we added better stuff until we reached the point that some.of them became luxury food. I used to think that it was food from the former commonwealth that we just embrace as our own but look at how much italian food we embrace, and more recently Spanish and French. Oh and because of Aldi and Lidl, I think we have accepted that the Germans are actually pretty good at desserts!

I know growing up my old dad wouldn't eat anything unless it was cooked at home by our mum, the only exception was occasionally fish & chips from the local chippy - you can just imagine a council house in the 80s with 4 late teen / early 20s boys in the house, the various different take away meals we brought home after a night out - (Chinese, Indian, Kebabs etc) according to dad absolutely everything was "foreign muck" & we really got it in the neck if there was a take away smell in the kitchen in the morning or we didn't throw all the wrappings & any left overs away. In India in the South where I hung out a few years back in Kovalam they don't eat very hot food so I was always asking for hotter. I may go tonight as well. Probably do Chicken dansak, cauliflower bhaji spicy, tarka dal, pilau rice and say 5 poppadum with a good few Cobras. Really build myself up for the game tomorrow. Any points will make it a great start to the season. Hope the players don't follow my choice tonight though.
