It's the French who are pushing this they have always wanted their language to be the official language of the EU. However this is up to the EU if they want to make their lives harder so be it. If A Polish MEP wants to talk to a Latvian they will probably use English as a default. French maybe the language of diplomacy but English is the language of business.

If you export to the EU how are you meant to plan how to do it without knowing what paperwork is required or how much it will cost? Waiting for those 3 examples...

A valid point which is why it will take a few bumpy months before things calm down and the UK government hasn't helped with it's VAT solution which hopefully they will change. However what was clear from day 1 because the EU told us so is they would not allow UK business to import cheap goods from outside the EU white label them and re-export to the EU avoiding custom duties. So even though the supermarkets didn't have the full details until recently it was obvious that understanding where your products come from is a basic requirement and simplifying their distribution which they should have done after the contaminated meat scandal should have been a priority years ago.

These questions aren’t that difficult to answer if you have done your homework properly and you are prepared for a couple of different scenarios. Perhaps you would like to explain the difference in rules over what was expected to happen and what has happened and whether that might reasonably have been anticipated. If I thought my business was going to be badly affected I would have been searching for new markets and diversification and not just hoping everything would be ok. I won’t give you the businesses as that would be unfair on the owners but I’ll give you the sectors. Telecoms, building and hi-tec engineering.
