Sky’s satellite dishes, sky’s monopoly and Sky movies and the other rubbish drove the prices up. If we started from here with broadband it would be a lot cheaper. It is cheaper now, all Premier games are accessible for a very small price via IPTV. Sky, BY etc are responsible for the vastly inflated wages.

I have always thought it strange when you hear of a whip round and the players raise a couple of grand. Wouldn’t they look brilliant if one week, they all gave 10% of their weekly wage to the NHS or whatever charity they all agreed on. I'm not sure players are, or ever would, collectively have a whip round for any deserving cause? I thought the 'NHS would suffer' point was merely a ridiculous observation by the PFA on the amount of income tax collected by HMRC from footballer's gross salaries? Some of it would inevitably find its way from the Exchequer to fund the NHS.

I take the point about how many of us would donate to these causes but everything is relative. My story of Kuqi not just paying the £100 bill is like your avaerage earner s***ting himself over £5. Surely, once you are earning these ridiculous figures, you can not care for the money? I played in a celebrity golf day years ago and my host said to watch the footballers looking through their goody bags! I don’t get it - how much dough do you want?

It was a stupid comment next they will be saying that if they take a pay cut think of the damage it will do to the champagne and caviar industry. Edited by Badger11 (13 Apr 2020 7.05am)

Think you'll find that many of them earn considerably more than that. Annual bonuses alone are often worth well in excess of 1 million pounds. Often those bonuses are paid out for trading synthetic financial instruments that have no positive impact on the real economy. In contrast, top footballers are providing entertainment which is enjoyed by millions, even billions, of people worldwide. I'm not attempting to justify footballers' wages, by the way, I just think there's a lot of hypocrisy going on here. Originally posted by est1905
Well for a start a top banker or Lawyer earns around 1m a year and the many years of study and dedication to their field gives them the discipline and humility to deal with that status and the earnings that go along with it.

And if you're seriously suggesting bankers show humility, you obviously weren't around, or didn't pay much attention to, the 2008 financial crisis where many people who deserved to end up in jail continued to pay themselves millions while taxpayers bailed them out and suffered the years of austerity that followed -- the results of which are a big factor behind the NHS being as depleted as it is today. But, yes, go ahead and blame young footballers...a much easier target while the establishment continue to make themselves richer! Originally posted by est1905

Do you think it doesn't take footballers many years to reach the top in their profession? They just happen to be out on a field instead of in a classroom. Originally posted by est1905
So In summary, these 18yr olds you speak of are in many cases earning multiples more than Bankers or Lawyers yet it takes people in that profession many years (sometimes decades) of study, hard work and climbing the ladder to reach the top. So they have earned their position through hard work and discipline. The spoiled little brats that might or might not be the next Messi (99 times out of 100 NOT!) have it given on a plate and then think they are above everyone else and the rules we all live by as a result.

Good point. I've not heard of any voluntary pay cuts at JPMorgan...meanwhile, our MPs have just awarded themselves a 10,000 pound bonus to work from home, something the vast majority of the workforce is just having to get on with. Originally posted by the.universal
Always easy to spend someone else’s money. Would/have any of the salaries types on here take a voluntary pay cut to help the cause? How much?

The difference between footballers and bankers is the supposedly close link and bond between players and fans. And I’m personally talking about footballers going a cut for the reason that the club and the game is looking in trouble if they don’t. They could take a cut and have it written and signed that if in the near future the cut isn’t needed the players get their money. But no, it’s evidently clear the club isn’t in their minds like people think is the case when they cElebrate with us.

I think that's a very fair point. Originally posted by Rudi Hedman
