Italy have already been sent home because their game against the kiwis was cancelled. They could have qualified by beating NZ, knocking the saffers out in the process. Before the tournament all the teams agreed on a 7 day window, at their own insistence, between the group stages and the 1/4 finals , leaving no room for rearranged matches. With these two points, and the precedent of the NZ Italy match already being cancelled Scotland havn't really got a case.

Fantastic game. Scotland got their act together in the second half, but well played Japan. Great Rugby World Cup hosts and I'll be cheering them on against South Africa, even though it's a big ask.
