I think cancelling this cancellation is insanity. The issue is not about people getting somewhere a few minutes early, the issue is that the HS project represents a confidence in the UK's future. Most foreign investment comes in London and the SE because the north of the country is seen as some bleak provisional hell hole. HS2 was as much about image as anything else. The kind of project a confident nation carries out. To ditch it as this stage is to just surrender to decline. And just when it is revealed that the UK is outstripping the likes of Gemrany and France in terms of post-Covid growth. This project was about national prestige. To say to investors that you might want to live in the SE but if you invest up North, we can speed you up there quicker than now.
This is one of those situations where neither option is very appealing.

On the Today programme yesterday the boss of HS1 explained very simply why this project was so expensive and how, despite his obvious knowledge and experience in building HS1 he was overlooked for a senior role within HS2. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

The facts have changed, says Rishi Sunak Government says it will recoup money spent compulsorily purchasing property on the route, by re-selling back on the property market. I can only imagine the devastation caused to former property owners by having their homes taken and then re-sold , likely at a large profit.

This is jam tomorrow post next election which the north will probably not get as they are used to not getting. 'Vast swathes of the London to Birmingham leg of HS2 will have to be redesigned as part of a review ordered by the Government that could push costs even further'. 100 billion + who knows, or what the route is, even now.

Rishi Sunak admits list of HS2 replacement projects just ‘illustrative’ and not pledges. Euston really wishful thinking depending now on private funds. Really it looks like any investment with him there is 'doing your dough'.

Government haven't got a Scooby-doo what to do next. However, they could start by hiring some diggers to infill these holes "Sinkholes thought to be caused by the boring of tunnels for the HS2 rail project have opened up in a field. Two new holes were discovered on land on the outskirts of South Heath, near Great Missenden, Bucks, where the Chiltern Tunnel is being constructed. It means four craters have been caused by HS2 in the county in nine months." (BBC website, 17,2,24) Looks like going for low-cost options on construction is turning out to be quite expensive.
