I used to love reading the Molesworth books, and still pull them out of the cupboard under the stairs from time to time. Maybe SP needs to read ‘How to be topp’ Anyway, I digress. I don’t like the current London Mayor either.

This is not about the left, or the right, or immigration, it's about the man as an elected official. Can anyone tell me what has Mr Khan actually done as London Mayor. I just saw him on the BBC in Berlin. He comes across as an absolute fake who is just taking a pay cheque and we already have plenty of those on all "sides". I do remember him promising lots of new homes, has building started? The only thing I know that he has done recently, is make traffic lights stay longer on red. As did Ken, to make it look like congestion was worst than it was, just prior to rolling out the C charge. Why he is doing that again now is beyond me. I find it hard to think of anyone who is more of a total waste of space then he is. I genuinely would like someone to give me an alternative opinion on the Mayor of London, as I actually forgot he was The Mayor. Perhaps the best time to pose this question is the next time you shave? Why don't you stand for a Councillor and have a go yourself? Whereas Boris was great - and only wasted £300m on the new Bus No one is Smarmier than the Boris Calamity vanity project. Funny how his ideology of not wasting public money has never prevented him wasting public money. But I suppose you could argue that he never "wastes" public money if it enriches his mates.

There are a lot of things that the Mayor is not responsible for so I can understand why any Mayor wanting to make an impact with the voters look to vanity projects. You forgot to mention cycle lanes which has brought London to a standstill Boris started it and Khan has just played along. Some of Boris' ideas could have worked with better planning and less public money. An iconic bus to replace the route master which is known around the world would not be a bad thing. I quite liked the idea of a garden bridge but he should have picked on an exiting one and tarted it up or built a new one when people wanted it. A cable car across the Thames would work but the current one starts and goes to places the public don't want or need to go to. A new airport to replace Heathrow had a lot of merit we need 5 runways to cope with capacity a 3rd runway just kicks the can down the road. For me the role of Mayor is fix transport and to rubber stamp ideas that will attract tourism such as the wheel at Parliament. Other than that I would prefer they but out.

I'm sure that all of us can agree that Boris was crap in the job but the thread isn't about him.

A good and far more reasonable post about Johnson's tenure. Personally I regarded him as correct on the airport and I also thought the bridge was and is a good idea.

I was informed SK was one of the briefs that defended the London bus/tube bombers.

I don't think the 7/7 stuff is true....Rather amusingly he spent most of his legal career taking cases against the Met Police. He's hardly the best example we have to lead security in London.....He's an anti establishment figure who decided to become apart of it. Like most minority politicians he plays the wearing of two hats. Edited by Stirlingsays (25 Jan 2019 11.18am)

Yes, I'm no Lefty, but didn't Ken make promises and ... err... keep pretty much all of them? Boris is 2 things: charming and electable. Otherwise, something of an empty suit.

Poacher turned gamekeeper can be both good and bad. Also, you love our culture and values. They include the right to legal representation. That's everyone, Stirling, from West to Brady to suspected terrorists. It could be said that he took these "unpopular" instructions and then stood for high office. Would you have respected him more had he refused the briefs to avoid staining his embryonic political career?
