As I said, I wouldn't really want the US version of free speech where radical right wing or left wing, or single issue protesters can provoke people they perceive as incorrect in some way with impunity. All of those groups do still march in this country so I'm not sure you even really know what the current state of play is. As for the left and Islamists, they have been seen waving extreme banners and flags in the UK. I'm not for the banning of marches. I certainly don't agree with your view of free speech and essentially you seem to be suggesting that you prefer the status quo where thousands of people have recently been arrested in this country for what is essentially free expression that has 'offended'. Expression that happened before these 'hate speech' laws were introduced. Remember any riots happening because of free expression then do you? Tensions are inevitable due to demographic shift. Arresting people for mean tweets won't make a blind bit of difference......except convince more and more people that freedom is done in this country. Edited by Stirlingsays (15 Jul 2018 4.40pm)

Edited by Stirlingsays (15 Jul 2018 4.40pm) I will say that I believe a line can be crossed with freedom of expression; inciting violence against one group or another for example. I would believe that riots can be avoided by stopping certain forms of expression. I would prefer violence to be averted and I hope the police would too. I can understand people's frustration at finding it hard to talk out on certain issues without being labelled as something like far-right, fascist, misogynist, Nazi, Islamophobe etc. I didn't know there had been thousands of arrests under these laws recently. Nowhere did I say that violence in the past has been caused by freedom of expression, although state sponsored violence no doubt has. In the main, I agree with your opinion, my main point has been to say there has never been a gauranteed freedom of speech in the UK and that I wouldn't want the US style Constitution, personally. Maybe you would?

Fair enough.....if it's an honest misinterpretation then cool. As for being called 'slimy'. I like reading your views on here. I obviously differ with a lot of them but that's a different thing. I'm a strong believer in people not existing just within their own bubbles.....it's intellectually healthy. But when we partake in this ideological mesh it's going to get bumpy from time to time, especially if we get our wires crossed. As long as we keep it clean then it's a vent that prevents far worse exchanges. I don't think you're slimy....was it amusing?...yes....Could you be creative back? I'm sure you could. We can all play within the rules. It's just a political forum on a football site at the end of the day.

However, it was set as low as possible. Incitement to violence Blair changed this and the 'hate speech' nonsense started. A law that contradicts in many ways existing freedom laws and becomes entirely about 'random perception' The modern day conservatives have betrayed their traditions in continuing this complete mess. Is there moderation anymore on this site? Crazy posts on this thread. @SS, Was not a hate speech law pitched as a against certain mullahs? Are you conflating it with anti racism legislation which included certain religious groups like Jews under its protection?

There you can have all the circle jerkery you desire. I'm referring to all the 'hate speech' laws introduced by Blair and maintained by the Tories. How is it conflating when I'm referring to all of them.
