No. Ah Kermit, you can always be relied upon to stand up for those oppressed.....you know...apart from the actual oppressed minorities within Islam who are beaten, abused and murdered. "oppressed minorities within Islam who are beaten, abused and murdered" Wow someone standing up for Palestine. Great to see. Edited by Bert the Head (11 Aug 2017 10.09pm)

As the Korean war has never technically ended, a conflict involving north Korea has always been almost inevitable at some point in the future. Maybe tomorrow, or possibly decades away. So far the west has tried to crush the regime with sanctions. In that time the human suffering has only got worse, the people have been brainwashed and they have developed nuclear capabilities. The only way I can see the regime ending is through a war. The Governments grip on power is far too strong. This isn't really a pleasant option to stomach, but I'm yet to here any experts with any other solution. The only alternative I can think of is too keep holding and hope the problem will go away. However, the only other place where I can think of that this has happened is Cuba, and they have been far less threatening for decades. I'm genuinely wondering what alternative a government could adopt. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

North Korea fires ballistic missile over Japan. Asia is an amazing region - is nobody really bothered about it?

I'm sure lots of HOLers are. However, as almost all the options boil down to uncounted masses of Koreans dying on both sides of the border, there's not a huge amount of room for productive discussions. I did smile when I saw the Japanese premier quoted as saying that NK's action was an "unprecedented threat". I can think of two very clear precedents.

So who do we think we make the first strike? The situation is becoming a parody of an early Bond film...odd looking villain in badly fitting outfits (take your pick as to whether its Trump or KJU), secretive country with mad shouty newsreaders, alleged mad scientist hired to further their Hydrogen bomb development, assassinations all over the world... ...but where's the White fluffy cat? Or the underground cavern with a laser ready to slice opponents in half?

In an ideal world KJU and everyone who supports him, and Trump and everyone who supports him, would all get together and have a drawn out, bare knuckle down to the last man, battle royale. Mostly so we could just close the doors, and roll in the nerve gas. Two birds, one stone.

Likely as not, the long term solution for North Korea is going to be bringing them out of the cold, and flooding their markets with western culture and products. The soviet union couldn't rest that, North Korea won't be able to either. In all likelihood, its a regime that like Iran, requires a state of security and anxiety, and most definitely an omnipresent and potent enemy to retain power. The Soviet Union, was on the ropes certainly, but its death knell was that it couldn't survive once the US wasn't the enemy.

Irony is their lunatic dictator out to prove himself loves western junk food. Plus I've heard he loves European cheese. Has bundles of the stuff delivered.

How to get there is the question. China must stop buying raw materials. But Kim is achieving his aim in causing tension between the US and China. If China cooperate it would be easy to isolate North Korea. What do they export? Raw materials, seafood and funny marching YouTube videos?
