Which massively subverts Masculine roles and stereotypes, notably by creating strong female characters. Of course GoT is for adults, and Dr Who is for children (and adults who probably should know better). Game of Thrones 'massively subverts Masculine roles and stereotypes'.....errr...not really Jamie. GoT has traditional roles as a core of its story telling. I could reel off so many of the characters who fit that. It has some different takes....the female knight for example...but I don't see anything out of the ordinary with that....I'm not sure how this is 'subverting masculinity' when she displays masculinity. There are plenty of traditional masculine and feminine roles in GoT.....Both strong and weak male and female characters.....It's fantasy but it's far more a realistic representation of humanity than most television. It isn't selling 'progressivism' and it quietly benefits from that non PC element. Originally posted by jamiemartin721
But I see nothing wrong with giving girl fans of Dr Who (which there are a lot) a strong female role model yadayada. So you think that girls are short of 'strong female role models'? Well, they aren't....Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Wonder Woman,..We can't move for them and that's just in movies....Girls are being sold what is essentially a lie about most female adults. From my experience, 'strong, take charge' females...they are about...but they are very much a minority. I don't mind the idea of a 'strong female' character...they exist and so should have their representation....But not in the numbers we are seeing on the telly that's for sure....It's far beyond reaching the point of being a cliche. I can hardly think of roles in UK telly which show females that aren't strong.. I mean I'm constantly seeing beta males on the telly practically in every role going...especially on UK telly....Not so much on the successful US adult stuff. This is my complaint.....There are few representation of masculinity that actually reflects masculinity on British TV. Where is the representation?....Why are we putting out these messages that aren't representative of genders at all? Masculinity is nothing to be ashamed of and the people in charge are implicitly giving out this message....Especially when this stuff is aimed at children. There needs to be far far more of a balance. Originally posted by jamiemartin721
Notably of course Dr Who is not a traditional masculine role model, and never has been, and subverts the stereotype of male heroes (relying on intelligence, cunning and wit to win, rather than strength and power roles). I think you are perhaps showing your prejudices here Jamie. I have no idea why you regard masculinity as not being associated with 'intelligence, cunning and wit to win' ......Would you also say this of femininity? I've met people of both sexes who would fit that criteria....More males perhaps but it isn't mutually exclusive by any means. In the real world however, what scientific research has been done on intelligence differences between the sexes has found that men, on average, tend to more smarter and dumber than females....Females tending to group around the mean of average intelligence at higher rates than males. On average women are slightly more intelligent as a sex but have less brilliant individuals and also less ultra low ability ones. That's the real world....Not the PC one that's infected with 'feelings' and value judgements around intelligence due to nonsense notions of equality.....When fairness and facts are what should reign. In fairness I think you could make a great film or novel out of a transgendered James Bond. What you can't do I think, is just drop a transgendered Bond into a story, and do nothing with that. Same with Dr Who. If its just a woman acting in the same way as a man, its pointless. Like a said, Transgender James Bond is a great story / movie waiting to be told. Just making a Bond film which has a transgendered or female bond, that acts like every other Bond is boring. #liveandnotguy #thecockisnotenough #youonlychangegendertwice.
Trans gender Bond? White Shaft? I reckon you should start a crowd sourced funding project.

Yes, yes, er no. Pertwee and Baker were the best and fortunately fell nicely in terms of my age for me to appreciate them. The show started going downhill during Baker and didn't recover until Ecclestone. Tennant did OK and then it trailed off. My dad says Hartnell was good and I remember being scared of the Ice Warriors during the Troughton era when I was around 4 or 5. The Cushing films were a bit rubbish I thought. Just remakes of TV episodes. Cushing was better at sinister characters. 'Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD' a re-make of a TV episode!! You've shattered my illusions regarding one of my very early and very best cinema experiences (The Drake Cinema, Plymouth, 1966).

I know the feeling...I do have an arrogant air. The pendulum shift against the overt masculinity of the past had some validity.....But as always seems to be the case with these things it's gone too far.....Telly is just another example of it. There needs to be a pushing back to a more balanced acceptance of reality. 'I'm ok, you're ok'. Edited by Stirlingsays (17 Jul 2017 3.04pm)
