Never saw this coming ...... Dominic Fifield Dominic Fifield Crystal Palace have agreed a deal worth an initial 9m with Norwich City for the Republic of Ireland wing-back Robbie Brady to cast doubt on the south London club’s pursuit of Patrick van Aanholt. The offer for Brady could potentially rise to as high as £12m with appearance and achievement related add-ons, an identical arrangement to that negotiated with sunderland for Van Aanholt earlier this week. The Dutch international had agreed personal terms at Selhurst Park and is understood to have initiated what would be a stringent medical. Yet Palace’s decision to explore a deal for Brady would suggest Sam Allardyce is keeping his options open as to which left-sided defender to sign. Brady had been expected to move to Burnley. It remains to be seen if Palace also match the Clarets’ £10m offer for Hull City’s Robert Snodgrass. That deal may only be possible if Palace move on one of either Yohan Cabaye or Andros Townsend to Marseille or Newcastle respectively.

I don't really get this move. I think most acknowledge we are desperately short of numbers but why buy 3 potential left backs in the same window, when we are obviously still short at right back and central midfield? Plus how will we afford it under FFP wage restrictions? Can only be by letting at least one of Townsend/Cabaye go as Brady will want decent wages (as he seems to be in demand) and so will PvA.

Unless Brady was always Sam's number one target and is using the PvA bid as a way of pushing Norwich to sell to us

It was reported that Sunderland were refusing to sell VA until they had brought in a replacement so this might have been announced to force Sunderland's hand to sell now or because Sam doesnt intend to wait until the end of the month.

Although, he has been playing left back, is really a midfielder. I wonder if this signals the end of Townsend or Cabaye.

Would prefer over PVA, tidy player. Basically a straight swap for Townsend, considering we would then (presumably) recoup the 10M we paid up front to return him to Newcastle. I'd imagine Brady would want similar wages, so shouldnt impact FPP, if so

Brady is a winger who can play left back sometimes.

Perhaps we could play one of our new left backs out of position on the right, in a sort of role reversal kind of thing. If we get Jenkinson as well we can corner the market in full backs this window.

I think sam maybe thinking of playing the rest of the season with wing backs and we will need 2 wingback, the fact that we are touted as being in for Brady and pva etc, I think these players would fit that system and quite often fullbacks are unable to play wing back roles
