Do you think these players would still play for the honour of their country if their club were allowed to withhold their wages for the period? Why would a club want to withold wages from an international player because he decided to play on the international stage?

People saying he's selfish are idiots. Do you think Mahrez, Toure, Mane, Bailly, etc. are all selfish too? Or do you think they're just proud to be able to represent their country? Their absences will also hurt their teams, but for many players country still comes before club, as this should be the highest honour. Zaha was born in the Ivory Coast so he will no doubt be proud to wear the shirt. If it were not for injury Bolasie would be there too, but I don't remember people calling him selfish when he went to the AFCON two years ago? He is not flawless but I still love Wilf and wish all the best on his adventure. Hopefully he'll come back an even better player. On the Spurs front, I can't see them getting anywhere near our asking price until the summer.
I hope wilf does really well if he goes, Good luck to him. I will be watching him and I hope they win. It would do wonders for him as a player and to be in a winning team. What is clear it that Wilf wants to play international football like any player. What player can say that he did it all if he does not do that. A player plays for his club for the whole season, it's only right that he is released for international duty. We will miss him but we have cover. It will give others a chance to step up for a few weeks. We may be surprised. On another note, if some think we will be relegated because we lose a player for a few weeks, then we are a really poor team, which I don't think we are at all. We'll be fine. Good luck Wilf. (If you go).

Why would a club want to withold wages from an international player because he decided to play on the international stage? Er, because they're not working for them and getting paid massively for representing/working/enjoying time elsewhere. If you're a tradesman and you go and do some work for a charity, the boss of the site/building company/contractors isn't going to pay you.

I'd like to see who drops out/stepped up next month and for future England games. Nobody please come out with they give their match fees to charity. They still get paid the £100,000 - £250,000 per week by their clubs. I'd like to see what would happen if UEFA stepped in and said no payment to players at AFCON. AFCON would have to move it losing all European club players the countries couldn't or wouldn't want to recompense. Why is it every 2 years anyway?

They would if it was in my contract and if the service I provided was govened by rules that included a provision for staff to be released to other divisions of the same trade. I get what your saying though. My original post would have been clearer if I had just said, withholding wages was a silly idea to think about.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Zaha announced in Ivory Coast squad for Africa Cup' by jamiemartin721 It just shows how incompetent the England set up is that they've allowed a winger with the most successful dribbles in the league and 2nd only behind de bruyne on assists to go and represent someone else. Mind you we have got lingard he plays for utd so must be amazing.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Zaha announced in Ivory Coast squad for Africa Cup' by jamiemartin721 If we are a serious club then we can't sell our best players, especially mid season when we are just outside the relegation zone.
