They only found it after they had restrained him though. If you shoot people that might be armed you shoot a lot of unarmed people. Around 61 per cent of black males shot by the police are unarmed.

Which means that 39% of black males shot by police were armed.

The unarmed stat is a strange one.... A man beating the s*** out of copper is unarmed.... A man wrestling to grab a coppers gun is unarmed

Just because it’s your right does not mean you have to do it Nick.

Yes. But it does mean a worrying tendency to use lethal weapons on those not presenting or threat of lethal force

In the second instance that would be armed. Granted someone beating the s*** out of someone is a threat but one where the use of a taser or nightstick is a very viable option over shooting which could easily end up wounding the victim

Do you know many Americans. My mate has just come back from 5 years as a diplomat in Texas. He reckons they take their right to bear arms literally and are always 'packing'

Now that would be a seriously interesting job!

That's in Texas. Once again I don't think you realize how enormous this country really is? Its like saying the weather is the same in Ireland as it is in Turkey. Try getting a gun legally in NY State legally nigh on impossible. Weapon of choice in most parts of the Bronx is a Pitbull anyway!!

Given that only around a third of households are reported to have guns (including hunting households and farmers), that sounds like a huge exaggeration. As Jimenez said, that's also Texas where gun ownership is far more common than it is up in New England (for example).

Having lived in gun friendly states (Texas, Kansas, and Vermont), I can honestly say I met very few people who ever 'packed' a gun. I know a bunch of people who hunt, and quite a few who shoot as a sport (mostly targets at a range), but I know very few who carry a firearm.

Much like the current debate on these boards, most of what is written is hyperbole or second hand anecdotal.

As for the matter in hand, the police a far too militarized and too ready to pull a firearm in a confrontation. As President Obama pointed out last week (loosely paraphrased), that might be no surprise given the sea of guns and crime in some of the communities the police are tasked with maintaining order. He did not condone poor policing, neither did he excuse it.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

If I'm in a fight with someone for my life, and I have a taser, stick and a gun... I'm using the gun.

The liberal left (of which I admire on many issues) are as much a threat to black people in the USA as the far right are.
Kids are dying in huge numbers due to gun violence and no one says a word... A white police officer kills a criminal.,, and mass protests are organised. The crime stats for the black community in USA are shocking, but no one protests about that.
