they already get those benefits in france, germany and hungary. they aren't lining up in calais b/c of benefits. it's b/c they can speak english and have a much better prospect for work and education. Really and you know this how?
why do you think people are there? now remember, they get the same or better benefits in calais. it's just a few miles away. they aren't going to starve there. now, why is it that people would potentially risk their lives if it isn't for food, $, shelter? AND here's another piece of the puzzle to help you: they CAN NOT speak french but they CAN speak english. what say you to this incredibly challenging puzzle?

Keep the immigrants coming in. Just don't expect British culture to survive, and don't expect British people to be happy about it. Because it's wrong.

Of interest, it would be helpful if posters could start by defining what they think immigration is. Are you talking about anyone coming here to live, whether legally or not, of any nationality and for any reason? If, on the other hand, you are talking about specific groups, nationalities, races, then please do say so up front. Saves so much time.
As are pretty much 99% of those here legally. Lets be honest they don't come here for the weather or our sandy beaches
For what its worth I totally agree on the asylum part - first 'safe' country you meet should mean that country have the obligation to grant you asylum and you take it or leave it. Edited by The Sash (04 Aug 2015 11.11am)

Interestingly in the first quarter of the year around 250,000 people came to the EU to claim asylum; less than 10,000 came to the UK, over 70,000 went to Germany, with France and Italy receiving over 30,000 each. Even Hungary had 17,000 applicants. The myth that immigrants all want to come to the UK just doesn't stack up. And the availability of benefits and the amount paid to immigrants is not appreciably different to most other EU countries.
No he hasn't. It's complete unsubstantiated bs. Edited by nickgusset (04 Aug 2015 6.14pm) I did say in my post that the crisis was in housing and healthcare hence that is why hospitals are stretched to the limit and the housing situation is so bad with immigrants taking it all whether or not it is council housing or private rental it stops our own youngsters and fellow citizens getting a home over their heads. Its not rocket science to work out that if a few thousand people come into the country whether legal or otherwise they need a roof over their heads and if they need medical care then our doctors and hospitals supply it. It has nothing to do with successive governments not putting the money in. if it was not for the thousands of people flooding our little island over the past 20 odd years or more we would be fine and get to see our doctor quicker that in a two week waiting time period Nick! Do you have any evidence for this claim? I ask because without figures to back it up it just looks like casual racism. I think that even my grandson could work out that if say 100,000 people come in to the country then that's quite a bit of housing taken up ....or would you put them in tents ????
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

They should be criminalised if they are paying below minimum wage.

Why do people keep ignoring the 600000 empty properties in this country? They could house all of our own homeless and more. How much empty office / industrial space is there? Low rents and tax incentives could be used to encourage start ups.

You really need to distinguish the difference between immigrants (mostly economic, financial migrants), and refugees / asylum seekers, driven towards the UK due to political and social hardship. Many of those in Calais (such as the reported 13 y/o old orphan who has led his 8 y/o brother to safety only to be denied and victimised as an 'immigrant'). Fact is, the UK is only ranked 16th out of the 28 EU members in the rate of refugees coming in. Only 0.24% of our population are refugees. We take in fewer than most EU countries. It's disgusting that parties such as UKIP have made this a prominent area of UK politics. The 7000 or so people coming into Britain from Calais - most of whom will work their fingers to the bone to survive and pay into our economy - shouldn't be vilified but cherished as they prove the success of our nation which has historically helped those plagued with political hardships and violence abroad. We're a tolerant, liberal society, grow up.
Yep, there's such a haze of hysteria and fear surrounding these refugees, people are losing all sense and moderation, allowing the prejudices of a minority to dominate fact.

If they can't afford to pay the higher wages as you put it, why employ anyone you can't afford to pay a living wage, I bleeding well wouldn't.
