I know for a fact that he wants to play every week - not sit on a bench. Edited by The Dolphin (30 Jul 2015 8.50pm) No one is going to play every week, here or almost anywhere else. Yes, a few clubs like Chelsea with Diego Costa have a predominantly "one-forward" system but they are increasingly rare and, with Costa's problematic hamstring apparently playing up again in pre-season, it's pretty clear why. If being a squad forward is good enough for Dzeko, Falcao or Negredo, not to mention Rickie Lambert then frankly it's good enough for Murray. Some of you have a surreal view of the world. The fact is that Bamford, Wickham, Gayle and Murray will all get playing time this season and I suspect that unless one of them goes on a tear towards 20 goals, it will be more evenly divided among them than you might think. To imagine that Murray is a 38-game starter for a top 8 Premier League team when the aforementioned players don't even aspire to that is laughable (great player as GM is, by the way.) Get real.

We are building a very strong squad and Conor is the type of player we need.

The Sunderland forum is up to 50 pages already. Very mixed views on there - everything from 'he's our best striker' through to 'thank God'. I see him as a definite upgrade on Campbell (who isn't as bad as many on here seem to think in my view). A strike force of Murray Bamford, Wickam and Gayle looks pretty good to me, plenty of variety.

Didnt he score a bunch of goals in our first season in the prem to keep Sunderland up including a couple against City? If we can fix him up and coax that sort of ability back to the surface we have a potentially class player with years of growth ahead of him. Expectation on him will be lower since he is out of form and it could be just what the lad needs. Also we now have 5 strikers so should be prepared for every eventuality. A CB and we are looking tidy.

At first I wasn't that thrilled - then when I realized that he's only 22 it starts to make sense. He's only just starting his development, he has a ton of PL experience and he's been played out of position at Sunderland. I think he'll turn out to be a fantastic signing - especially with the service he'll get from our midfield. I'm looking forward to the start of the new season!

Dzeko is moving to Roma. I suspect Gayle will be either loaned out or transferred. The Mirror (again) is rumoring that Murray is wanted at Bournemouth (wasn't it only yesterday they were saying Gayle?). This story about Wickham only said a fee was agreed. That's step one. Step two is personal terms and step three is a physical. I'll get excited then.

Most sensible comment on the Sunderland board: "He'll look good as a striker in a well-constructed side, looked pretty poor as a winger in a crumbling mess to be fair."

sunderland was a travesty by spring time of the past season. i don't know how you could judge any single player negatively. at least qpr had some flashes with their players (even though they'd lose). sunderland were largely a complete mess.

He may not be as good now as Austin, but he has the potential. We're not having to buy proven players to stave off relegation this time around; we can buy for the future. Wickham is 6ft 3", good in the air and fast. So he's got all the physical attributes you want, he's only 22 and we've got Murray to tutor him. I don't think there's any cause to worry.

Wow, this really came out of nowhere. Big and powerful, and still only 22. I reckon we could see his potential fulfilled under Murray's tutelage. Would be very happy with this and we'd have a really well-rounded strike force for next season.
Think we need one more season from Muzza
