It's funny reading this thread. Most people have as their top 5 a mixture of things I think are absolutely amazing and stuff I think is junk. On IMDB, which is often reliable, most of the box sets recommended here get between 8.2 and 8.6. Some are worth it, some are worth about half that. I guess you just have to give things a go, you're the only one who knows what you like.
Yep, i know but it doesn't then logically follow that it is then the most reliable. A lot of people will watch any old rubbish and rate it highly. They are wrong. Example - Breaking Bad, 9.5 on IDMB and boring as anything.... Or you could just not like it. Everyone seems to think Firefly is the dogs bollocks, but for me, its average, I can see why they like it, but I'd never give it more than a 5. In fairness Breaking Bad has quite a few 'long drawn out meal times'

I thought 'Wolf Hall' was very good. Someone recommended 'Rome' - I think it's utter tripe. Also, did someone mention 'Lost'? Biggest load of junk ever made.

Despite finding it tedious, people kept assuring me that any minute it would become the best thing ever on TV. It didn't, hence my bitterness. Now, don't get me started on 'game of thrones'.......

And buggery. I don't mind sex and violence but it was just so pointless and gratuitous in 'Rome'. And the bit where it turns out Augustus Caesar gets turned on by beating his wife... it was just pathetic. It was a great chance to apply modern production standards to a classical period, and it just trotted out the same boring old stuff (Julius and Augustus) and randommly threw in sex and violence. Game of Thrones has got plenty of both of those and is infinitely better than 'Rome'.

Another show I quite enjoyed was "Romanzo Criminale" about Italian gangsters in 70s and 80s Italy. The second series dragged on a bit too long, but the first series was ace.

Sorry to say this but a few years ago I invested in the Boys from the Blackstuff box set and it's pretty much unwatchable. I did this with 'the Professionals'. Tripe. Funny, it used to be good when I was 8.
I'll make myself unpopular with some I am sure, but I re-watched the first series of Oz a couple of weeks ago. It has *not* aged well. Still a good show. But nothing more. And the weird Augustus Hill soliloquies just don't really work. I bought 'Oz' off the back of a similar thread on here a few years back. Managed about 8 episodes before realising I just didn't like it. One that's not been mentioned, which is supposed to be good (not seen it yet) is 'Borgen'.

Game of Thrones has got plenty of both of those and is infinitely better than 'Rome'. As Game of Thrones is make believe they do have rather a blank canvass to start from. In Rome I thought the squalor, the various gangs who controlled things, the intrigues etc were all portrayed excellently but it's all down to opinions.

Only two series I've actually sought out were the Sopranos (watchable, not as earth-shattering as I was led to believe) and Game of Thrones (very enjoyable, if only because it draws you in by making you want to watch so many characters get their comeuppance). Th Inbetweeners was good too.
