Cutting taxes for the richest This is a cynical class war sound-bite trotted out incessantly by Labour since the top rate of tax was cut from 50p to 45p. In reality the share of tax paid by the top 1% of tax payers is projected to rise from 25% in 2010 to 27% this year, higher than in any one of Labour's 13 years in power. Furthermore the lower paid 50% of tax payers now pay a smaller portion of income tax than at any time under the previous government. But more VAT. Swings and roundabouts, give with one hand take with the other. and besides, what a nation need isn't 'money in the pocket', its the functional aparatus of state. Is it any wonder people talk of failing Britain, when successive governments have continued to reduce public services (admittedly slower under labour than the conservatives) in order to cut taxation. Public services are what binds a nation together, they are the fabric of interconnectivity that bring us togeather as a people and feed throughout our culture and identity. I don't blame the conservatives alone, labour are just as bad, they talk up the idea of nationhood, citizenship, duty and belonging to a great nation, but have essentially spent the last 25 years tearing that fabric apart in order to win elections. I wouldn't vote conservative, but I absolutely would never vote labour either. Democracy in the UK is a dead horse, and has been since Blair effectively finished turning the Labour party into a Conservative lite party. Ted Heath was more left wing than New Labour. A signficant part of the electorate aren't even represented due the the abuse of constitutional democracy creating a two horse race for almost every seat. Its not the fact its a two horse race but because many people just do not want to get off their big fat butts and go along and vote....AND you also find that the ones who shout out loudest about the government of the day being cr@p and useless are the ones who have not voted anyway......this time round you really do have only two choices and that is to vote Labour or conservatives as to let the SNP get in on a coalition is suicide, and again IF Labour do happen to get in its DOOM AND BUST all over again I am afraid so take your pick.....the choice is yours... I shout quite loud and I don't vote and its not because I don't want to get off my 'big fat butt' but the choices, I and everyone else are given are simply an illusion, an illusion that you actually have choice and a difference between what you are voting for. Two right of centre parties of very little difference or substance who are there purely to keep the status quo and maintain a political cycle and system, supported by partisans who have no balance to their politics. The biggest difference between Labour and Tory in modern Britain is the colour of tie they wear. Give me an option on a ballot paper that says 'none of the above' and Ill be there.

Are you just blindly ignoring this? I don't read the 'Guardian', I am a 'Mail' and 'Telegraph' reader but I have read the link. Ed Miliband categorically said that £15 billion of savings will come from taxation. When you consider the working families of this country this equates to £3K for the following parliament.

The best thing anyone can do is vote - if every single person who didn't vote actually went out and voted for someone different the system would change immediately. Literally overnight. As it stands, the two main parties don't actually want you to vote... It means the Tories can concentrate on their core votes, the pensioners and the rich and Labour can concentrate on the Unions.
