Can we please dispense with the notion that there is such a thing as a FREE player. There is not. There are out of contract players who can be signed without a transfer fee, but that does not make them free. It usually means the money saved on a transfer fee goes at least in part directly to the player in the form of a signing bonus and/or inflated wages.

Any or all of the so-called "free" players on your list would cost the club a considerable amount of money, quite possibly more than other options that commanded an actual transfer fee.

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

The following players are available for free and the England-based players would require a small compensation to be paid to their clubs if below 24 or 25, not sure.

1. Micah Richards - Fiorentina (on loan)
2. Fabian Schar - FC Basel
3. Tom Cleverley - Aston Villa (on loan)
4. Sammy Ameobi - Newcastle
5. Stephane M'Bia - Sevilla
6. Alexandre Pato - Sao Paolo (on loan)
7. Danny Ings - Burnley
8. Yevhen Konoplyanka - FC Dnipro

Which of these do you think we should or could sign?[/quote]

None of those would get in our first 11
Having said that do not know much about Konoplyanka.

If, IF we stay up then we need a CB as good or better than Scott Dann to play alongside Scott Dan.

Two forwards - if we are splashing the cash, then Remy and Austin and I would wet my pants but I suspect we would be getting Gestede plus one as one as he fits our profile for signings better.

If Fryers don't come on then its time to look at LB cover as well.

I think we are also looking at a new GK. Ruddy is a good shout but Norwich are likely to be a PL side by then.

Perhaps more pertinent is who goes out of the door ??

Sanogo and Ameobi will be off - cant see us wanting to keep either. GM could also be on his way. Damo Delaney and Hunt I also think will be off, possibly Hangeland as well.

Without trying to stalk you, I think that's pretty much spot on.

We need a good young center half, if we don't have one coming through.

Not sure if Kelly will be moved to center half or stay as cover for the fullbacks.

As for the forwards, Rudy Gestede has looked good when I have seen him (only a couple of times on telly).

As for a goalkeeper, I would like to see someone like Timo Horn the German U21 international. I think that if Hennessey is not the long term replacement for Speroni, then we should look at getting in a young keeper for Speroni to work with (or as a replacement if the worst comes true).

I can see Hangeland and Ameobi going at the end of their contracts. Hunt has had good reviews, so he might be able to do a job at right back as back up to Ward. Fryers probably needs time and games (possibly a season's long loan somewhere if the club thinks he can come good).

Whispers of Tim Krul are circulating, along with goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman (and hopefully his son)

Your having a laugh aren't you? Well , I really hope you are , Richards , ings and pato would walk into our first 11 , mbia based on everything but his Qpr form would be a decent addition , and schar and konoplyanka have been linked to arsenal , Spurs liverpool etc so I'd imagine both are pretty decent.

Is it just me that finds Ings being linked with top 4 clubs ludicrous? He wouldn't be anywhere near starting for them. At his age (22), his best move would be to a Stoke/West Ham/Swansea/Southampton/Tottenham type of team. We'd be at the lowest end of that category so a chance but not a particularly strong one.

26th January 2010 - Enter Administration
2nd May 2010 - D-Day 1 - Survival at Hillsborough
1st June 2010 - D-Day 2 - Survival at Lloyds

I saw that on another thread. He is a very good keeper. How about the Aussie that's getting good reviews for Club Brugge: Matthew Ryan?

If Wayne H is not up for it, Tim Krul would do as our no 1 goalie. Together with CD Curtis Davies (out in the cold at Hull) and Charlie Austin I hope Alan P. include at least two Academy players (Gray and Boateng). Then we should be able to compete for a top ten place the coming season, our THIRD in a wow (sorry Roy) in PL. With or without yankee dollars..

We only need to bring in 2 or 3 players realistically - 4 absolute max, but we need to make sure we buy quality in the areas we need to strengthen (forward /cb are musts) and perhaps have the luxury of buying young potential where we are looking at cover (i.e CM or wide players)

As for the GK situation - torn between can Jules see another season out or do we need to invest.

I think we will go for Gestede for deffo plus another forward for a decent sum - Ba, Ings or Austin, based on what we have seen this season of Ings and Austin that would be superb.

A pool of Gestede, Ings or Austin or BA with Muzza/ Dwight / Chammers would be fantastic to choose from with Ameobi, Sanogoals and Campbell going.

Potentially a wide midfielder - a younger, rawer player from Champ level as cover and to learn? (Gray from Brum type ??)

We need a CB who is better / as good as Scott Dann to play with Scott Dann - haven't seen enough of this Celtic guy to comment on him but if we could keep Damo for another season as cover I would be happy

Not setting your sights too high, ey? Gestede hasn't scored again since we've been linked with him. Good point on needing a winger, it's lovely to have punch through the middle.

[Link]

We were linked with that lad ^ last summer, only 18 and could be a tasty acquisition. Might be an idea to let him get some more games in the champ first, could buy and loan back to Jan.

There's a few decent centrebacks in the eredivisie right now. Feyenoord are behind Ajax and PSV in the goals against table, and their centrehalves are aged just 20 and 21:

[Link]

Kongolo was linked with saints but maybe not after Alderweireld has said he'd like to stay with them.

Oh and course Austin's class. Our position looks perfectly lined up to sign him.

I would be willing to have decent punt we sign him in the Summer - young, with potential, not too expensive with wages more in line with our structure - ticks all the boxes for our signing profile. Good in the air and puts himself about - no secret AP wanted a player of that ilk and its why we got Sanogoals and Aemobi in January

Schar would be an amazing partner for Dann! Just don't think we are quite on the right level for him.

Whaat's everyones thoughts on tomas kalas? On loan at boro from chelsea. He played in the 2-0 win at anfield last season and looked very promising and is now part of the boro defence which is the best in the championship. 21 year old centre back, could be a viable option either on full season loan or a transfer.
