It's the modern day socia economic practices that he is arguing against

I meant framework, but it's a fair point either way considering how far out some of his views are. My biggest beef with him - and what I was trying to outline there, is his willingness to take potshots, but unwillingness to even attempt to effect change from within.

Cowardice or reticence?

All he can do is spread 'the truth' and hope that many follow. The bigger the following the brighter the future for many.
But sadly it'll never happen.

Are you saying Brand is some latter day Jesus, come amongst us to enlighten us all?

He looks like Jesus, but his choice of disciples (Wossy) leaves much to be desired.

He a very naughty boy.

Its ok, he'll be fixated on something else in a few years. The picture of him on the Anonymous demo showing his face says it all. A well meaning prick consumed by his own ego, who without making any real engagement in a subject has catapulted his ego to the forefront.

I agree except that I don't believe he is 'well meaning'. I believe he is selling a philosophy. He is packaging a vaguely leftish ideology in a nice coffee-table sized package for morons to think it is meaningful.

We seem to live in a society now where people who go round saying things like "let's redistribute all the wealth" and "let's write off personal debt" get a big round of applause. Everyone who goes "ok, now let's look at the logistics and economics of what you are suggesting" gets called a Nazi before they've even finished talking.

It's very easy to say the things people want to hear. Coming up with working solutions is what should make someone a hero.

Unfortunately, from what I can gather from Brand's babblings (admittedly I haven't read his book, just chatted to folk who have) is that he isn't really putting solutions out there. He's just putting his punchable face out there instead. Maybe I'm being harsh, but perhaps it was because his 'comedy' wasn't in demand any more and he needed another way to keep himself in the media.

Brand was on Question Time a little while ago and every utterance he made was greeted with rapturous applause by the moronic audience who lapped up his bullsh1t rhetoric.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

Slowly getting through the book... He does say that he is trying to effect change from within himself.

Does that not make you cringe, Nick? How self-absorbed does a person have to be to utter that publicly?

WORRIED that your teeth will be stained after a heavy night drinking red wine? Fear not; drink a bottle of white wine before going to bed, to remove the stains.

Amen to this chap.

So much easier to make noise than actually do something about it.

Basically its revolutionary politics, socialism and anarchism for people who don't read and want to identify emotionally with social justice, but not actually do anything about it really. Its a bit like someone releasing a charity single to help the starving, you're not really instigating change, ending poverty, you just posturing.

If this was Mark Thomas or Mark Steele, I'd take it all more seriously, because the man, even if you hate him, has put the 'hours in', rather than turned up late to the party in his Prada Che Guervera T-Shirt.

Its almost as if having gotten bored of being a drug addict Brand was all about being 'the dandy', then he was the sex symbol and now he's bored of that he's become the 'revolutionary', it'll be spiritual guru next.

Read Peter Kropotkin or Emma Goldman instead.

You know its disturbing when I agree with you, and I think you're probably right, he's well meaning in his own head.

Nah. My money is on him turning extremely right wing next and becoming a spokesperson for the EDL. He'll have to re-invent himself in some sort of extreme guise if he wants people to continue knowing who is.

I can see it now. An OK! double spread of Brand and Jayda Fransen's nuptials. Followed by divorce, then rehab, then born again Christian and then finally marriage to Kerry Katona and happy couple 'loonies gone to Iceland' adverts.

But he's not! As you can see even on this very thread, generally it's only really me and Nick sticking up for him in any way, the rest is almost exclusively personal attacks on Brand with some critique of his ideology. I was gonna quote a Stuk post the other day where it was literally personal attack after personal attack with no intellectual engagement whatsoever, but missed my chance and now it is drowned in a million other similar posts.

You don't have to be an avid HOLer to realise that me and Nick are not exactly universally respected for our views on here, so to suggest that someone we have respect for is 'saying things people want to hear' is a load of bollocks. He has actually managed to unite posters on here who are almost always at loggerheads. That in itself is impressive.

I am not at all saying Brand is some sort of saviour. There are many academics and intellectuals on the left who are infinitely more detailed in their arguments against Capitalism, but to be fair to him Brand isn't claiming he is. He is one bloke with some unorthodox views who is fortunate enough to have a fairly high soapbox to shout them from. And at the very least, in raising people's awareness of genuinely brilliant grassroots movements like the E15 mums and the People's Assembly he is doing something I personally applaud.

You are being sold Socilaism, nicely packaged in £24.99 bundles, that eases your middle class guilt, helps you feel superior to us 's*** munchers' and gives you something to talk about at length (see above) and noisily when he opportunity arises.

Brand is no more offering 'arguments against capitalism' than I am a credible choice for the next manager of Palace, however don't let that stop you from belieiving that he will incite the masses to revolt against the system and create Jersulem on England's green and pleasant land, no more than I believe that with the right training, a decent left back and someone who knows where the f***ing net is is stopping me from leading Palace to Europa League glory.
