That's football. Same happened with Wright's replacement Gabbiadini. We were right to cut him loose early.

If we do sign a couple of strikers (proven at the higher level) then Dwight will be possibly 6th choice.

Unfair on the lad to keep him imo if that transpires.

Of course but I doubt it will. I also think that Gayle would prefer to stay with us and actually benefit more due to feeling wanted and having a regular home instead of being shipped off again to 4th club in 3 years.

Comparing the two there is a bit strange, for 1 Gayle was not a replacement for anyone. Second, he was definitely bought as a rough stone to polish and Marco was the finished article replacing a very prolific striker.

None of us know what Pulis plans are for Gayle or if he rates him or not, I would say that judging by the fact he makes the bench and has got game time then he is still in his plans and he is slowly getting him used to life in the Prem.

Maybe.

I'm just an old cynic

Been following football way too long. I do hope it is one of those very rare occasions that I am wrong.

I'm not though.

I still think Gayle can be nurtured to play the Jerome role. Forget the lack of height because we don't play the ball to Jerome in the air anyway. He will probably need to beef up a bit but he is clearly a better finisher and similar to him pace wise. As a counter attacking team he would suit that role particularly away from home ie, Villa and WBA(cup). With a good pre season under his belt he could come up trumps.

I would say that Jerome's one great strength (holding the ball up and bringing others into play) is Gayle's biggest weakness (his pass completion percentage is appalling; half the time the only thing he brings into play is the opposition.) Not saying that Gayle might not have strengths as a striker, but I think the chances of him playing the Jerome role effectively are vanishingly small because the best of Jerome is the worst of Gayle and, quite likely, vice versa. If we are going to accommodate Gayle, it won't be using the approach we have now.

Jesus, you lot are a miserable bunch of bumsniffers! This has got to be our best season in the Loadsadosh league and all you can do is pick on a player who you possibly watched for an hour all season and then you decide he's no good based on what? Nothing intelligent!

You've got to be a troll because the reasons this is an unbelievably dim-witted post are about ten miles long starting with the fact that most contributors to this thread also contribute to hundreds of other threads too so they are hardly and picking on Gayle as the only thing worth talking about and secondly because -- (you seem unaware of this so let me allow you into a really big secret )-- this is the Internet and it actually exists as a forum for people to air their opinions about subjects like Gayle.

Like I said, troll.

We wouldn't even be discussing Dwight if we had just paid £1.5mill for him. Just be another Dobbie or Kebe.

The subtext is always the actual money we did pay. Was it a huge huge waste or not?

1. When you start your post by calling people a bunch of "bumsniffers" you'll probably find they then often won't focus on the substance of what you said.

2. When you base your conclusion on something about which you have no idea (for instance, how do you know how many times I saw Gayle play for Peterborough last season? As it happens, I live a lot closer to Peterborough than I do to Palace) then you can reasonably expect not to be taken seriously.

Some people forget how far he's come in such a short space of time. That improvement won't stop, and TP is looking forward to working on him in pre-season. He's going to be great for us.

This with bells on, running out infront of TV cameras and 25k + fans is a massive leap from 4k at Bishop's Stortford. Not to mention the caliber of players you are up against! All in 2 years....

Which again begs the question - what on earth were Crystal Palace Fc doing putting faith to the tune of nearly £10mill in such a player?

We've gotten away with it this time because we are staying up.

We didn't pay half that amount for Dwight Gayle.

It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

4 year contract plus transfer fee = £10mill (£6 mill WAS the transfer fee according to Darren Ferguson and he should know)

I think with regard to the above two things.

1. None of us knows exactly what we paid for Dwight, but you can take it as read that whatever it was, it was almost certainly less than the exaggerated amount reported in the Press.

2. I don't think we "got away" with anything. In our position, we had to take a gamble because we were unlikely to attract a proven Premiership scorer. Even if we'd gone down, Gayle wouldn't have been a bad gamble to take (at the right price). OK, thus far it hasn't really worked out but even if we'd been relegated, we'd not be badly off as we'd have a player far more suited to contributing next season in the Championship than will probably be the case in the Premiership.

Dunno but I'd trust the accounts that were filed by the club.

That show we spent £16.25m in summer transfers. Which leaves a total spend of £10.25m for the other 15 players and with what are perceived to be known about the other transfers, it doesn't add up. I do realise that several of those we got in were free.

What Kermit always forgets is that it's a fee of up to £6m but I'll always keep reminding him of the facts. It's akin to saying we got £15m for Wilf, we didn't.
