Can't believe some on here are insinuating they'd like to get rid of TP! I tell you what, if the board chose differently we could have had an 'R' next to our name in a couple of weeks...

If we go down playing football, I will be fine with that. If we survive playing this tripe for the next 5 or so years, well I definitely ain't fine with that.
Just my personal preference, but the division is not important, it's the way we play.

I beg to differ, Premiership = £60m p/a. Championship = £2m p/a. I know which one I'd prefer.

I just want to see my team play football. The dream of ever being successful is really gone nowadays and with financial fair play coming in it will ensure the big stay big and the lesser teams can never overspend to compete with the aid of a sugar daddy. If we stay in the division playing like Southampton then count me in, playing like we are right now, sorry it's just horrible to watch and at times downright embarrassing.
...

Sorry to gatecrash your forum but this is all so familiar. The threads on The Oatcake used to read just like this. I totally agree with Dangermouse, I'd rather watch entertaining football in a lower division than Pulisball. £60m or £2m what does that matter to the fan? Is it your money? We go to football to be entertained.
The game against Southampton sounds like most of the games we had to suffer last season. This is why Stoke fans were so glad to be rid of him. He is a poisoned chalice - yes he's good at avoiding relegation, but at what price to your club's soul?
And it already sounds like he's started patronising you by telling you to remember where you came from and telling you you're not as big a team as others around you. This is what becomes so infuriating. Even after spending £90m at Stoke, the fourth highest amount in five years in the prem, he was still telling us that we were minnows and weren't good enough to take the game to teams like Hull and Reading!!! I totally sympathise with you. You need to keep him until the end of the season, hope he keeps you up and then get rid quick, before you're all gnawing your own arms off in boredom next season, because he only gets worse as time goes on.

The thing is mate the football has not been that bad we lost at home to Man UTD drew away at Swansea and lost to a better Southampton side. Our anti Pulis lot seemed to make there mind up about him before he was manager and disappear when we win which has been a lot. They reappear after a bad game like they expect us to win each game. The football is not bad at all.

Well as one of the anti Pulis lot I think I've made it perfectly clear that it isn't the results, it's the manner in which we are playing that I am against. Since the window I felt with our additions we could push on, but instead we are treating every team like Bayern Munich and basically being used as a passing drill by the opposition.
I don't expect to win each game and have never said so, but in a list of Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Villa and Southampton at home which games would you of seriously targeted as winnable. We needed two wins from our last five home games now it's two from four.

No we don't, we need to get more points than 3 other teams. How and where we get them is not decided !

We don't even need that, we only need to match the results of three of the teams below us. I'm not anti-Pulis per se, but his line-ups never seem to change (regardless of the preceding result), and the results have been much better than the performances, which are boring - even when we win.

1 0 wins= more points= Survival. Scoring 3 and conceding 4= 0 points=Reelegation. That's how Pulis looks at it. Once we stay up he will start looking to improve the style of play, until then we just have to suffer it because it is the best choice we have.

Just my personal preference, but the division is not important, it's the way we play.

A few years ago we was all outside sainsburys singing for our club to remain a club and now we've got fans coming out with this utter s***e. How could anyone prefer to go down "playing good football" what the f***?! Take a look around, it's about being effective in the world of football and GETTING RESULTS. Chelsea are top of the league but don't play football close to the standards of City but Mourinho knows to win the premier league you need a solid back 4 and the ability to grind out results! Tony Pulis is a legend whether we stay up or not to get us in the position he has and if people wanna "go down but play 'nicer' football" I don't know what planet they're living on.

Come on guys, we waited almost 10 years for the opportunity to play in the premier league again and the support just seems so negative recently! The atmosphere was very poor on Saturday also, we need to stop expecting so much and get behind the team no matter what, win or lose, good or bad! I don't know if anyone also recalls we were favourites to go down with the lowest points ever and look at us now! We shouldn't be bitching, we should be proud and trust Pulis, look at all the other teams who got new managers (Fulham, Cardiff, West Brom etc.) I bet they would've done anything to get someone like Pulis in!

I dont think its a case of going down 'playing good football' - more of a case of going down and not taking the game to those around us more..Swansea (1st half) and Southampton are decent PL sides, but Real Madrid they arent.

Having a game plan which seemingly is to sit on our own 18 yard box, let the opposition have the ball, maybe get a foot in and then see what happens, especially at home, is just a wasted opportunity.

Going down by losing by the odd goal in every game is still going down

As was shown at Swansea - when we look for more 'go forward' we can cause teams problems - time to drop the two defensive midfield shields and put someone who might be able to create something - and play 5 yards higher up the pitch...as we did at Swansea 2nd half

This cedeing the ball to the opposition is crazy. We all know we have limitations and that Holloway for the most part bought a load of old sh*t and I am not advocating some gung ho, Charge of the Light Brigade forward every time we get the ball but we have to tip the balance more to going forward. We have to create something for Murray

Oh but that is the point the Dangermouse was making, as now highlighted in bold.

Swansea and Southampton are better teams than us, and all but a stupid mistake by Puncheon, we would've got a point against them which would've been excellent - Southampton are a QUALITY side. Swansea absolutely destroyed us at home under Holloway and FULHAM beat us 4-1!!! We are playing much better under Pulis and WE ARE OUT OF THE RELEGATION ZONE. I just can't understand people that are criticizing this guy!? Before he came we wouldn't still be in with a shout in our wildest dreams! The support has gone down hill of late and it really is frustrating, some people need to remember where we came from - we have the best chance to stay up in the Premier League for the first time in our history and if we do so Tony Pulis is nothing short of a legend! End of story, how people disagree with that because of so called "hoof ball" is beyond me! D'you think Chelsea fans right now are moaning about Mourinho and saying "I'd prefer to come second playing better football than City". It's ridiculous!

Southampton and Swansea where there for the taking imho - we just didnt give it anything like the go we should have in either game (well Swansea at the end)

They arent 'quality' - they are decent, better than us man for man, but to play so defensively and not shake them out of their complacency all game was shocking.

Southampton were comfortable all afternoon because we simply didnt press of test them at all...and that was down to a) some players turning in absolutley dreadful performances and b) the way we set up

Forget Puncheons cock up, forget the idiot Webb - We had one shot of any meaning in 90 minutes at home

Southampton are quality, full stop. If you disagree, you clearly haven't watched the premier league this seaon - if we tried to match them for quality it would'be been humiliation and people such as yourself would be slagging off Pulis even more. We are punching way above our weight with the team we have and under anyone else would be a certainty for relegation at this point of the season.

And in terms of Puncheouns cock up - forgetting it is pointless, it happened and the fact of the matter "hoof-ball" or not, if he didn't make the error, we would've got a point and I said before the match I'd take a point all day long against Southampton.

I honestly don't know what Palace fans want at times, it's just a constant whinge about something - we should appreciate what Pulis has done for this club and judge him on results - Rome wasn't built in a day and tryna take risks and set up some Barca type s*** with the quality we have and the position we're in would be absolute suicide.

Some people just don't understand tactics or football and what it takes to get to the top - RESULTS. I'll go back to the example of Mourinho and even Sir Alex last season, neither team played anywhere near the quality or slickness of Manchester City but they got the points when it mattered by having a solid foundation and ensuring they get the points required and I'm sure neither set of fans complained when they won the title and we shouldn't be complaining about "hoof ball" when we are in our position that shouldn't be in our wildest dreams!

We can worry about football at a later stage, and be concerned if we're still playing this style of football 3 seasons down the line - right now and for the next couple of seasons (if we stay up), our main focus HAS to be survival - if you say you would prefer to be in the Championship but play "more attractive" football then I think you have forgotten that this is a COMPETITIVE SPORT and the dream of every single team in the Championship is TO BE IN THE PREMIERSHIP - not play more attractive football without the results!

It seems again another simple quite obvious thing has blown out of proportion with some really, really odd views - I understand not everyone will agree but how any Palace fan can say they would prefer for us to go down then stay up REGARDLESS of the football is just completely and utterly beyond me.

Come on! We are on the brink of making history at this football club and people are bitching the "football isn't good enough" - that's absolute madness!!

You are getting quite irate arent you - you might want to stop frothing at the cock a little.

Take a deep breath, swallow your ritalin and read my posts again, youll see I am not whingeing or pissing about the 'attractiveness' or otherwise of the fayre on offer but more the fact we set up to play 80 minutes on the edge of our own penalty area - that will not keep us up. We need to balance the attack / defence better or we will simply go down on a raft of unlucky 1-0 defeats

If that Southampton team who turned up on Saturday were 'quality' then I suggest you havent watched much PL football either and no amount of you going off on wilding w*nking ranting tangents about Slur Alex or the Special Needs One will make me think otherwise.

You go on about it being about results, sorry I mean RESULTS. Well we arent getting them at the sharp end are we but more importantly the good performances we put up at the likes of Chelsea and Old Traffors are looking like distant memories - and thats a worry

On the day Southampton were beatable and after a ten minute or so flurry at the start we simply allowed them to play their way in to the game and pretty much exert no energy staying in it and staying ahead.

Its not about matching them for 'quality' as I said if you could be bothered to read it - man for man they are far better but to essentially give them such a comfortable afternoon through a combination of a) players just not playing and b) Setting up so we just cede 80 odd yards of pitch to them in the hope we win the ball, hoof it in Glenn Murrays general direction in the hope something happens off the back of it is not tactical genius....one shot on goal in anger and one Bolassie run which should have been a red in 90 minutes was the sum total of our attacking threat and that wasnt down to Southampton being better on the day - It was down to us
Edited by The Sash (10 Mar 2014 1.00pm)

Well done - good reply.

Just to remind you again - forgetting statistics, we lost 1-0 to a mistake.

Just saying

Where is the cast iron guarantee that had that mistake not happened we would have got a 0-0 ?

We had one shot, straight into the keepers middle - they not only scored but hit a post and had a free kick scrape just over and they did that playing largely lethargically and comfortably, Jules also pulled off a 'worldy' not knowing the flag was up for offside

They had no need to chase or quicken the game and dare I say it probably saw that we were so deep they knew they didnt need to break a sweat to hold on.

Whichever way you cut it Pulis and the players got it monumentally wrong on Saturday - forget the goal, tactically it was not what was required on the day

Not denying we were poor on Saturday because we were - that being an excuse to not care about what league we are in -

"(although I dont care what Div we are in - I cant say I enjoy this PL mallarkey one bit)"

Is extreme. To criticize Pulis like this after what he has done to this club is extreme and unnecessary.

Like I said, certain clubs around us would've dreamed to have Pulis take over and probably would'be appreciated him a lot more.

We are still bottom 3 (if not bottom) in terms of quality so if we stay up, Tony Pulis will be a legend whether people agree or not - he will go down in history as the first man to ever keep Crystal Palace football club in the Premier League, let's hope it happens and everyone can be a bit more optimistic and supportive (although supporters job is to 'support')

I dont care what Division we are in though and never have - support is about supporting the team whatever Division we are in imho and I havent enjoyed the greed, the meedia w***ing over top 4 constantly and sh*t plastic atmospheres that the PL generates.

We got the best manager we could have at the time to keep us up against the odds, the fact we are still in with a shout is almost a miracle when you look at what a balls up Holloway made but that still doesn't bestow a messiah like untouchable quality on Pulis - Saturday was a cock up, even given the limitation of what he has to work with, the first half against Swansea was a cock up - two games where 6 points could have been possible imho, if we had shown some ambition beyond grinding out a 0-0 if we were lucky

Yeah and tbf I would agree with most points you've stated here. I think my original post was more directed to danger mouse who stated he would prefer to go down playing good football then to stay up for another 5 seasons playing "hoof ball" (effective) football which just seems illogical to me to say the least.

I guess it's all about progress and I think if we wanna stay in PL, the first few seasons will be a bit of a dog fight and the number of points will ultimately speak loudest. Survival is number one priority 100%.

I do agree with your point on the atmosphere though, and I would go as far to say the lack of it at times has disappointed me the most out of everything , it was always what made me most proud of Palace. Last season we were on a different level at times (Burnley home + Peterborough away to name a couple of memorable occasions).

That's why I say, at times like this, we really do need to join together and get behind our team more than ever, no matter what - we were a genuine 12th man a number of times last season and can be once again for the remainder of this season! Don't forget where we came from.

Good post.

Worth the wait.

Yep....... amen to that.

Pulis has worked wonders to get us where we are, don't forget that.

indeed hoof...

lets be clear here...weve played s*** football for 90% of the season with little idea when going forward.

now people seem to think it should change.

we aint got the ability in the squad to play good football...if we did we would be.

we do however IMO have the ability to get more in an attacking sense, but blame pulis for this? madness!

Really, Chamakh, Murray, Bolasie, Puncheon, Thomas, Bannan, Williams (I know), Gayle, Pep, Ledley, Ince.
Are the squads at Stoke, Norwich, Cardiff, WBA, Sunderland. Hull, Swansea, Fulham, Villa really so far superior to ours? They don't seem to give up against the better teams and actually attack them and have been rewarded for it at times.

Of those players you mention i will highlight the ones o dont agee with and try to exaplin

Chamack
Murray...not sure he contributes to good play, hope he proves me wrong but not even sure hes PL class
Bolaise
Puncheon
Thomas...past it, decent cross but never going to be a big part of our team. passenger on large wages
Bannan
Williams...for me should be starting alongside jedi
Gayle
Pep...strong but fails with end product, again like thomas journeyman passenger on big wages
Ledley
Ince

for my ten penneth...pulis has come in and made us hard to beat and a lot more stable defensively...the downside to this is that i feel we probably arnt spending as much time, or maybe just dont have the quality to hurt teams properly, i have no qualms with becoming a set piece team, as long as they actually become effective.

@Sash - mate you really have the bit between your teeth don't you ?

Southampton was a bad performance no doubt, but I don't know what has justified a lot of people on here being so worried, I really don't. Genuinely.

Lets take our last 6 games:

Hull (H) won 1-0 against a relegation rival. Shots: 13, on target 4. Verdict: Vital win against a potential relegation rival. TP nails it.

Arsenal lost 2-0 against a champions league side. Shots 10, on target 2. Verdict: Good performance against one of the best sides in Europe. TP couldn't do it, but gave a good account.

WBA (H) won 3-1 against a relegation rival. Shots 10, on target 6. Verdict: Vital win against relegation rivals - tactics spot on in first half. TP nails it.

Man Utd (H) lost 2-0 against a champions league side. Shots 15, on target 6. Verdict: Good performance against one of the best sides in Europe. TP couldn't do it, but gave a good account.

Swansea drew 1-1 against a mid-table side. Shots 6, on target 3. Verdict: Dire first half but TP saw that, changed it and caused many problems resulting in red card, penalty and chances to win. TP has ability to change the team to good effect.

Saints (H) lost 1-0 to mid table side. Shots 6, on target 1. Verdict: Poor performance and tactically out-thought, however Saints are a strong side and played against our strengths. TP got it wrong and couldn't make a difference.

I see nothing but confidence to be drawn from that. Can the teams around us say the same ? I doubt it.

Too many people are focusing on 1 admittedly dire game and getting the jitters. Even the best get it wrong on occasion.

I'd much rather be us than all of the teams around us. We are staying up.

Believe.

You'll be forever in my family's memories and it was an honor and privilege to play and lead in the red and blue
Yours sincerely
Mile Jedinak

Its not about matching them for 'quality' as I said if you could be bothered to read it - man for man they are far better but to essentially give them such a comfortable afternoon through a combination of a) players just not playing and b) Setting up so we just cede 80 odd yards of pitch to them in the hope we win the ball, hoof it in Glenn Murrays general direction in the hope something happens off the back of it is not tactical genius....one shot on goal in anger and one Bolassie run which should have been a red in 90 minutes was the sum total of our attacking threat and that wasnt down to Southampton being better on the day - It was down to us

COYP

Not illogical in the slightest Captain. I want to watch good attacking football, not see us stifle the s*** out of the game until you honestly wonder what it was that attracted you to it in the first place.
Watching this dirge year after year would be illogical. It also takes the majority of the crowd out of the game as well, as it did on Saturday. Forget the HF/Arfur they will sing all game regardless, but the majority of fans are the regular kind that need action and excitement to get them up and at it and on Saturday for long, long spells they were lost to the game as they watched Southampton pass the ball around for fun.

If we go down playing football, I will be fine with that. If we survive playing this tripe for the next 5 or so years, well I definitely ain't fine with that.
Just my personal preference, but the division is not important, it's the way we play.

Going down by losing by the odd goal in every game is still going down (although I dont care what Div we are in - I cant say I enjoy this PL mallarkey one bit)

We were piss poor all over the pitch, it happens. The ref didn't help us at all.

I think a lot of diss service has been done to Southampton, they are a top ten side for a reason, we are not, they win more than they lose, we don't.

I wasn't surprised by the result, I was a bit miffed at the manner it which they got it, i.e. at a canter, but not the result.

I wouldn't expect TP will tolerate another performance like that.

Going down by losing by the odd goal in every game is still going down (although I dont care what Div we are in - I cant say I enjoy this PL mallarkey one bit)

And where is the guarantee they would not have gone on to make a mistake of their own and we'd won 1 0? If your auntie had bollox she'd be you uncle!

Which was kinda the point I was making given there seemed to be a rather blind thread through the thread that we only lost because of one mistake - we didnt
