Neatly put by Kermit. Its like we all called stuff, and other kids, gay at school but when one of your closest mates tells you he's on that side of the street, you shut up a bit and don't go along with the mob anymore. Must have happened to a few of us down the years.

I have a Gay Nephew and Cousins and will join in with the we scored three song. I am not homophobic and its more an anti Brighton song than about gays, I will also call someone a Queer,Bender,Faggott ect in banter but doesn't mean I hate gays. We have at least 1 gay player possibly 2,This wouldn't stop me singing any song at Selhurst. Even the gay fans amongst probably sing the same songs.

Actually, it's probably my few gay mates who call stuff "gay" the most, and take the piss out of others for being "gay" with the most frequency. They're probably also the ones starting the majority gay chants at football - the younger generations (and I am in my 30's) like to appropriate this stuff and essentially take the piss out of all that old homophobia.

I was thinking how cool it would be to have the first openly gay Prem League footballer. Maybe even two.

I think we are uniquely placed to live with the consequences, a tight-knit supportive club and group of fans, based in a highly cosmopolitan place. And we don't give a monkey's what anyone else thinks.

Any views? I am sure there will be a range.

I am certain Palace have had many gay players. Like the other teams in the Prem I bet Palace already have at least two now. They just need the bravery to come out foe their own sake.

So what have we learned so far:

1 It doesn't matter if someone is openly gay, nobody cares
2 But we wouldn't want anyone to come out because they would get lots of stick
3 There is no need to consider whether we are gay friendly
4 If we were to try to make our club gay friendly then we wouldn't get any good players
5 We are already so gay friendly that we have a player who is gay in the first team
6 But nobody knows who it is - or at least nobody is saying
7 In any case we are all sure he wouldn't want to come out
8 And if he did we would have to immediately transfer him to Brighton
9 I must be gay

Did I get it all correct?

Doesn't anyone find it boring being so flaming predictable, can't we all try something a bit radical for a change?

Hand holding in the Holmesdale?

It's interesting that some of you guys think palace do have gay players, I for one would be very happy of course as this would be ground breaking if they came out. But in this climate at palace with the "chants" I don't think even if they were comfortable with there sexuality they would come out.

My feeling is that in a modern, liberal society like ours the vast majority of people are not homophobic, racist, anti disabled and the like. What we dont like is being told what we can laugh at and indeed what we should be thinking by Peter Tatchell, the Duggan family and the Muslim Council of Great Britain. Its also not suprising at football where we go to enjoy ourselves and have a few beers in a largely working class, blokey, anglo-saxon enviroment that we get a bit near the mark...

It's only a matter of time before a current player does come out. They'll have a rough ride

Ouch.

A player will come out at the end, or towards the end of their career. Too much at stake.

My own view is that most of us do and say a lot of things that are probably politically incorrect and, unfortunately, offensive to some people -- particularly the more thin-skinned among us. But with the exception of a small minority of genuine bigots that you'll find anywhere, I don't think many of the tongue-in-cheek "bender"-type comments are fuelled by genuine hate or even dislike or disrespect. If you want to live in a cosseted world where there really is nothing edgy, there are strict limits on humour, and where everything is treated with cut-glass respect and there is never a risk of causing offense then you can probably make a case for that but personally, I wouldn't want to live there. I'd rather step over the mark occasionally, secure in the knowledge that those people who know me can judge my character accurately and will forgive me if I do, occasionally, screw up. So I think, right now, the balance is about right. And if I ever offend you, don't be a bender. Just laugh.

I think you need a rethink on point 4, probably more.

How do you encourage coming out for footballers? Singing, 'Oh South London is wonderful, it's full of heterosexuals, homosexuals and bi-sexuals, oh South London is wonderful?' Or playing Jimmy Sommerville tracks, or a couple of boy dancers in The Crystals for the women and gays?

A serious point here, and some of what I've just said has some seriousness to it, maybe all this kind of encouraging coming out puts just as much pressure on a gay player as much as him keeping it PRIVATE for his limited time as a footballer, something he might just do without when trying to compete for his place, club, career, contract.... Probably why I couldn't give a sh1t which Palace player is gay or not. Leave him to it, his life and job.

The thing is Maple and with respect I think your missing the point no pun intended but I think what most people are saying on here is that IF we have or signed a openly gay player then the vast majority of the Palace fans would not give two hoots and get behind him, again no pun intended.

What you seem to be saying is that we should actively go out and find a gay player just so we can be regarded as cool and that is what people are finding a bit.. well .. not really how constructing a skillful sporting team is all about really.

DJ John Peel once said: "Supporting Palace has a certain cult value, like pretending that some Peruvian rock band is the best in the world."

Seems to me it not the gays, blacks or muslims that get upset but their lilly livered, bearded, sandal wearing,Guardian reading bed wetters that take offence. Not really sure the minorities appreciate their fawning interference.Call me a bluff old traditionalist my I would machine gun the lot of them....
