The best comments he ever made were at half time of that FA cup Semi against Liverpool. We were 1-0 down but he said we would win because we were fitter and stronger than them. A minute into the second half Pembo proved it.

Another of football's legends has gone.

The BBC website have listed some classic Allison comments :-

MALCOLM ALLISON QUOTES
"A lot of hard work went into this defeat"
"You're not a real manager unless you've been sacked."
"John Bond has blackened my name with his insinuations about the private lives of football managers. Both my wives are upset."
"A lot of people in football don't have much time for the press; they say they're amateurs."

RIP Big Malcom Allison, a true legend that will live on forever in the hearts and minds of the Palace faithful.

Let's just hope the East London knuckledraggers have some decency and show some respect.

Before he came along we were perceived as a small team who had spent a few years above our station. Big Mal totally changed the whole club and made us look like a big club even in the old 3rd division. So well did his vision put things in place that in the last year of the seventies we had the most exiting promising team in the country and Selhurst Park had the biggest league crowd anywhere that season.

Big Mal changed the nickname, the colours, the youth policy, everything and gave us what was unique at the time, the sash, which is still associated with us to this day.

I would wholeheartdley support all attempts to ask Millwall to wear their normal blue tomorrow and we wear the sash away kit with pride.

There could be no finer tribute to the man who made Crystal Palace Football Club known throughout the country.

When I started secondary school I had a very good friend whose father was the Maitre D at a top Italian restaurant in London. Big Mal was one of his best customers whenever he was in London. At the time Mal was coach at Man City (he took over as manager a year or so later) but he effectively ran the team as Joe Mercer was increasingly shifted "upstairs" to a general manager role.
My mate's father told Mal how much his son and friends supported Palace, and as luck would have it, City were due to play Palace a week or two later. Mal gave him two directors box tickets, and said we should to get to the ground early and to ask for him at the main entrance.
On the night we duly pitched up at the ground and sure enough, we were wisked through the gates and big Mal strode up, shook our hands and showed us into the City dressing room.
City were at the peak of their powers, having won the championship the year before, and in the dressing room were Franny Lee, Colin Bell, Neil Young, Tony Book etc etc; all household names. Autographs were signed, and we sat among these great players as they prepared for the game. Big mal was larger than life, joshing with the players, keeping the atmosphere relaxed and fun, but professional at the same time.
We then took our seats in the directors box (we had never sat at a game before) next to the commentator Brian Moore and his son. I can't remember what the score was (I think City won), but it was an experience of a lifetime. Imagine how I felt when, a couple of years later, Big mal came to the Palace as manager! It was never a dull moment with Mal at the helm, Cup semi final, relegations, foreign players brought in, Fiona Richmond, playing a sweeper system etc etc., and all the while Mal in his fedora, cigar in one hand and champagne glass in the other.
He bought a pub in Brigstock Road and re-named it "The Ref and Whistle". What a man. He established a scouting network throuout the country and brought the very best youngsters to Palace, and when he brought in Terry Venables as a coach he put together the team of the eighties, but left before they came of age.
So sad to hear the news, he will definately never be forgotten.
RIP Big Mal, thanks for all the wonderful memories.

That's a lovely story!

RIP Big Mal

They don't make them like that anymore.

Malcolm Alisomn's reign was earlt days for me as I Palace suppoerter but certainly some of the best. I can remember being really proud that I was the only Palace supporter in a West London school in 1975/76. I went to the away wins at Chelsea, Leeds and Sunderland. The train broke dowm on the way to Sunderland and we had to run from the station. I got to the game about 30 minutes into the first half. I even bought a fedora and I still have my red and blue scarf from that season. I remeber the pain of losing to Southampton in the semi final.

Malcolm Allison really did help make Palace a bigger club and many peoples second favourite team. He was a great character and we played great football.

I will raise a glass of bubbly to Malcolm on Saturday evening.

Farewell to a true Palace legend.
