they did inded turn up in fancy dress.we won 4-1 and ian wright scored a hatrick.if i remember we had to win 4-0 for something or other.and it kicked off big time in the arfur..ask your uncle patrick matt he'll remember it.

Yeah i remember that game, as an 11 year old at the time I'd never seen anything like it. They were right in the corner between the arthur and holmesdale, where away fans were back then, and the barrier at the front just got pushed clean over and they were everywhere.

Didn't the police storm the pitch on horses?

Optimistic as ever

It was their 'Going Down in Style' Party. It all spilled onto the pitch and prompted a cavalry charge by mounted police diagonally across the pitch from the Sainsburys/Old stand corner to the Holmesdale/AW corner.
I recall seeing a photo afterwards showing Bugs Bunny whacking Adolf Hitler in the stand.

I remember it clearly..

I must have been 15/16..Back then I used to sell the lottery tickets in the ground until 2.50, then rush my little bag to the lottery office then used my "Matchday Staff Pass" to go where the hell I liked in the ground.

That particular game I sat right at the back of W block I think- where all the singers went.

Back then the away supporters seated section was still in the same place as it is now, but the away fans could use any entrance of the Arthur to get in- hence supporters mixing together.

Well all the Brummies were happy singing before the game walking pass the back section of W block in their fancy dress....when a couple of them called a few Palace fans Cnuts or something like that. So being mental the Palace fan or two spat at the Brummie so it all kicked off with the fighting... I pooed my pants and stood right at the back watching these nut cases going at it.

It's still clear in my mind as the first bit of Football Hooliganism that I've been really close to.

Ahhhhhhhhh..... The memories.

I was on the Holmesdale and remember it well. A bizarre day all round...

I was standing in the Arthur Waite with a few of my mates. We were walking down the Whitehorse road on the way to the game talking to some Brummy fan in a Hitler costume, he seemed alright at the time. During the game we were watching this superman walking on the pitch in front of us when a palace guy from behind short forward and gave him a right old clouting before disappearing back into the crowd, you could do it then as it was standing. After the game, and long after the police had stormed the pitch with their horses, I returned quietly home. When I opened the Croydon Advertiser the following Friday I saw the pic of this Hitler Brummy on the front page. I have got the video of the game but haven't played it for ages and can't remember if it was edited out. I'll check it over the weekend.
