As I have Charlton and Millwall mates I thought I would start a thread on where they are and what next season holds for them. Charlton The fans are cautiously optimistic, their manager has led them on a pretty good run away from relegation to mid table mediocrity. Charlton fans are obsessed with the Ipswich model and believe this is the route to the PL. Essentially the model is that you get a good manager and players, err isn't that what every club tries to do? It looks like Ipswich built a Championship side in L1 where there are few financial restrictions (outspending all others) so when they got promoted to the Championship (which has FFP) they only spent £4m getting promoted to the PL. So rather than roll the dice in the Championship you do it in L1. The problem Charlie Methven has is that he's a minority owner and has to persuade the fund manager owners in the US to gamble. Charlton fans believe their team is poor and needs a major buying window if they are to get out of the Northern league (sorry I mean L1). Conclusion Some strong teams have been relegated with some coming up so L1 which is mainly Northern will be a tough division to get out of. My guess: Playoff if they are lucky.

Millwall Their fans are buzzing right now. With the return of Neil Harris they have been on a good run away from relegation. Millwall are stalwarts of the Championship and to date have survived normally on a smaller budget than most teams so punching above their weight. The club has just announced a new deal with Lewisham Council and a 999 year lease of the ground. There will be a major redevelopment of the area around the ground and their stadium will be rebuilt. The outside of the new ground looks like railway arches which I innocently mentioned only to be growled out that the new ground will look like the outside of the coliseum. Anyway no promises when this will be done. Millwall don't buy big but are about to announce the signing of a centre half they got on loan from Spurs for £3m which will be their record signing. They are buzzing about this guy and it seems a good fit. Their American owner died in a car accident and his son has taken over. His dad was very conservative with money and Millwall were stable under him. Millwall have just sacked 3 of their Senior Management team including recruitment which the fans are happy about. My mates reckon they are going for it this season, so is Berylson Jnr gambling unlike his dad. Conclusion. However they have very little money so if they get this wrong they could find themselves in trouble. My Guess: I reckon they will be looking at a playoff place. The centre back Millwall are buying from Spurs is Tenganga who was highly rated but got sent off against us when we beat them 3-0 at Selhurst.

South of the River rivalries are an odd thing. Charlton look to us but we don't reciprocate. We traditionally look to Millwall, but they don't look at us (West Ham). We're just Stripy Nigels. Thus, we have our new found chums on the south coast who, while they return the favour, put the term "South London" to the test. Hardly Glasgow, is it?

You could write a synopsis about any team in any division and the conclusion will almost invariably be the same: the clubs with the most money will be the most successful. This has been fleshed out in various books and articles. We are more successful than Millwall because we are richer than Millwall. And then Millwall are richer than Charlton. Every fan of every club wants their club to "spend more money", by which, of course, they mean that they want someone else to cough up money so that they can enjoy a better experience as a fan.

Actually I was told 30,000 and apparently they are selling out this season. However like us due to safety rules it will never be a 20,000 crowd. Anyway the stadium is nothing more than a promise, this is all about building housing estates.

Agreed. What I find fascinating is the gap between them and the PL. If Millwall sign this player for 3m that is their record signing and the average they spend in transfers per season on all players. So for them this is their Benteke moment. A couple of seasons back they had a Leeds centre back on loan and wanted to buy him but wouldn't go to the £1.5m that Leeds wanted. That centre Back is now supposedly worth £20m so maybe Millwall are thinking they can flip this Spurs player. As for Charlton they are so far down the pecking order they were praying that they could afford to sign Freddie Ladapo (yup ex Palace) they did and he's crap. Edited by Badger11 (13 May 2024 12.01pm)
