Slightly surprised to immediately start seeing some references to 'if Roy was still in charge' across various threads. Given that I have nothing to do at work today, I thought I'd compare Roy's final five games to Glasner's first five games. Hodgson final five fixtures: Everton (Away - FA Cup) - Lost 1-0 Glasner first five fixtures: Burnley (Home) - Won 3-0 Goals Scored Per Game Hodgson - 1 Expected Goals Per Game (xG) Hodgson - 1.05 Goals Conceded Per Game Hodgson - 3 Expected Goals Against Per Game (xGa) Hodgson - 1.44 Shots Taken Per Game Hodgson Glasner Shots Conceded Per Game Hodgson Glasner Average Possession Hodgson - 40% Passes Per Game Hodgson - 395.6 Average Pass Accuracy Hodgson - 76.8
We've scored 0.2 more goals a game under Glasner and our expected goals total has also increased. However, Hodgson was closer to meeting his xG which indicates that the quality of our finishing has dropped. At the other end of the pitch, there is obviously a massive drop in the amount of goals conceded, reducing by 1.8 goals a game on average. We're also now expected to concede less than a goal a game on average, a metric that has massively dropped from 1.44 per game. We're conceding far fewer shots and the shots that we are conceding are less often on target and less likely to result in a goal, suggesting perhaps that they are from tougher positions. Our possession has increased by over 3% but the volume and accuracy of passes is about the same. I think it's worth adding as well that Glasner has had less key players available in that run. If you consider Eze, Olise and Guehi as perhaps our three 'main' players, Hodgson had Olise available twice, Eze available three times and Guehi available four times. Glasner, on the other hand, has had Eze available in four games but hasn't been able to use Olise or Guehi once yet. Once those guys are back you'd expect our metrics to improve further. It's clear that we've improved under Glasner. Assuming he can keep us up, with a full summer transfer window under his belt, there is reason to believe that next season could be significantly improved. Anyway, that's half an hour wasted. Where I think the Glasner v Hodgson debate comes in is in terms of what results we could have expected had Roy still be in charge. Pre Bournemouth I would contend that results would have been broadly similar if not exactly the same. Post Bournemouth I think it's safe to say that Hodgson would not have put Ozoh on in an unfamiliar position late in a game that was in the balance. I think it's all about survival now this season, and given the run of games left, it's going to be tight. Assuming we are successful in staying up we should be in for an interesting summer and hopefully a more positive approach to next season.

I reckon OGs stats will take a massive hit over the next 2 games . I hope im wrong . We will still be okay though . He needs time . Un fortunately most managers are 10 losses away from getting the sack .

I do love a pointless thread. The bottom line is that a section of fans made Roy's tenure untenable. No one knows if he would have secured enough points to keep us up with the players available. Glasner has the same task, and likewise, his success will depend largely on who he can put on the team sheet and how other teams do. Frankly, I wouldn't be confident of taking points from any of the remaining games, whoever the manager is.

First of all well done and thank you Canterbury - a very interesting read. I see improvement under Glasner and think that will really accelerate when players like Guehi, Olise and Doucoure are finally available. As someone has said, these stats are likely to take a battering over the next 2 games. One point from those would feel like a victory. I see it as all about getting over the safety line for the rest of this season. Glasner will then have a full pre-season with a hopefully freshened up squad. I greatly respected Roy as our manager and what he achieved. But the football had got so dire and the trajectory was downwards. It was time for a change and this one, given time and investment, may actually move us onwards and upwards.

The only thing that I notice when comparing is that in Glasner's fixtures we have played 3 of the bottom 6 and in Roy's it was 2 (including Everton who are there by points deduction). Only difficult game in the last 6 was Spurs where you could argue in Roy's it was Arsenal, Brighton (spit!) and Chelsea (being our bogey team). Reality is that I don't think Glasner has made a startling difference to results and nor would I. I always thought Roy was the best option in keeping us up though it would be ugly to watch. Personally having made (or forced) to change we have to give Glasner the chance. No one was going to come in and change us drastically with the squad that we have. There was holes in it before the season started that SP and the Board didn't address and it certainly didn't allow for injuries. If we go down the fault lays there, not with Hodgson or Glasner. We just hope we can muster enough to stay up and he is given a decent squad to compete next season.

Couldn't agree more. Guardiola wouldn't get any extra points out of this team at the moment. We are where we are because we lack strength in or squad and that rests with the Board and recruitment team. It's cross your fingers and hope we can pick up enough points. I do wonder if Glasner wonders what he has walked into and wouldn't be surprised when we get the usual summer of inactivity and one year extensions whether he will stay.
