Early observations under Glasner

I was sitting about 30 yards behind Glasner today and it was evident how proactive he is coaching from the sidelines, even down to positioning players for restarts. Early observations; Positives - we play more directly getting the ball forward more quickly without aimlessly passing it around at the back as much as previously - we vary our corners and set pieces more and could have had a couple of goals from them today - we lined up 5 defenders across the 6 yard box when defending corners to prevent blocking off and I thought it worked quite well - there is evidence of progress in our aggression in pressing Negatives - the system doesn’t suit some of our players, notably Mitchell and Eze. Eze had flashes of brilliance today , but overall finds himself in positions where he can’t exert his influence in the attacking third. - we find ourselves outnumbered in midfield on occasions and leave gaps which better teams than Burnley and Luton would expose. - other than through Anderson we don’t pass the ball that well from the back - we lack clinical finishers and strength from the bench ( but that was the case pre Glasner too). With regard to today, Wharton played a mature game today negating Barkley’s influence in the main. The downside was that this role seemed to inhibit his creative contribution and we relied on Lerma as the spark and he is not a particularly good passer of the ball. The three week break should permit Glasner the opportunity to further refine his tactics and also allow the injured players time to recover. I feel reasonably positive, but don’t envisage a quick fix.

Excellent post Patrick, all of it spot on really. Obviously before Luton scored today we were commenting on the positive changes, especially the point you made about defending corners and crosses better and some of Luton’s crossing was superb today, especially from Doughty on the left. Just a shame we spoilt it last minute Same old same old with our lack of finishing, struggling late on and letting in a late goal, but like you I can see a positive difference. Same old same old with our lack of finishing, struggling late on and letting in a late goal, but like you I can see a positive difference.

Agreed, we need to replace Mitchell with a PVA type player, hopefully Eze can get used to his new position but if he can't any suggestions who would fit?

For me it looks very promising. We look much more solid in defence playing the “5” at the back. Change to get the ball forward more quickly makes us far more threatening and likely to score rather than just relying on the flair players to threaten.The change to flood the box with players adds to our threat. If you can add to these changes the addition of the flair of the Olise and Eze type of player we will make big strides forward. Today instead of having to bring on Edouard , Hughes and Ahamada we could have brought on Olise ,Doucoure and Guehi then the outcome could very easily been different. Like Roy Oliver is going to be hampered by the depth in quality of our squad. With Roy-or Oliver we will survive but to progress the Oliver way we need a tweak in personnel to take full advantage.COYP

For me it looks very promising. We look much more solid in defence playing the “5” at the back. Ward must be delighted to find that he has found a system that suits his style but pissed that it has come when he is about to be retired. The pressing game is good and shown to be effective but we need greater fitness to carry it through the whole game. The. If you can add to these changes the addition of the flair of the Olise and Eze type of player we will make big strides forward.

A good balanced post and really helpful from someone who was at the game. On the match thread some of Eze’s problem seemed to stem from an unwillingness to put in a defensive shift. I wonder what your thoughts are on that? Olise had a similar problem but turned it around fairly quickly. If Eze’ s difficulty is more about the system then maybe we take the money this summer and with Doucoure back next season play Wharton further forward.

Furthermore, it means that Eze has someone on a similar wavelength to him as they have built up a good understanding and it should make us far more of an attacking threat to actually create and score more. If and when Olise returns that will help Eze.
There will be less emphasis and pressure on Eze to be the creative outlet with the opposition having to concentrate on Olise too.
Furthermore, it means that Eze has someone on a similar wavelength to him as they have built up a good understanding and it should make us far more of an attacking threat to actually create and score more.
Leaving that aside we really need a pacy forward to really stretch the opposition and get in behind them.
Having that beside him would get the best out of Mateta too as his approach play has improved.
I suppose the conundrum would be how you can accommodate all of the above in the same team.
I think if Glasner plays with the same formation next season then either Eze or Olise may be sold and we'll be bringing in a different type of forward.

Today I always felt we needed that second goal and there were plenty of opportunities to get it. If Glasner can coach a killer instinct in front of goal we will start to fly.

He was never going to be able to wave a magic wand, the small incremental improvements he has introduced demonstrate progress.

Regarding Mitchell, he probably needs to grow into the role a bit more. He is maybe a little stuck in his old defensive ways under Roy. The crowd urged him to take on the man and cross and Mateta should have buried it really so Tyrick can do a job.

The left was mostly well protected by Lerma slotting in for Mitchell. The change was obviously when Ahamada came on. Just the wrong rotation when we had no other forward or midfield outlet. In any other game it would have been Schlupp probably.

We obviously should not have conceded but Luton are an ok attacking side so it's not shameful. Edouard hit the bar just before after it all. That would have killed it.

We will need to stay up with this group before Olise and Guehi are ready to return really but as some have said players like Richards and Ward have put in good shifts.

That’s definitely a positive, because they were both struggling when played before the change of formation I’ve never been a fan of three at the back with wing backs, but I like how we look now, especially with Munoz not scared to get forward and even Mitchell with better finishing could have had a couple of goals in recent games

That’s definitely a positive, because they were both struggling when played before the change of formation
I’ve never been a fan of three at the back with wing backs, but I like how we look now, especially with Munoz not scared to get forward and even Mitchell with better finishing could have had a couple of goals in recent games

that is a very good OP. can i add, that watching the Arsenal v Brentford game i was struck by what a pack of thugs Brentford are. Maybe we could take a leaf from their book. showing good discipline with the gobby mouth, and being an utter savage in the tackles. Are we too nice for our own good ? can i add, that watching the Arsenal v Brentford game i was struck by what a pack of thugs Brentford are. Maybe we could take a leaf from their book.

Gary Linekar/David Beckham......too gentle for their own good.

Atletico Madrid.....11 thugs and a great tally of results from a relatively modest financial outlay.

It’s a big part of why the 91 team was so good, yes we could play a bit and we had pace, but we had that tough spine in the team that would fight for the shirt and weren’t scared to go into battle if needed, thorny, ninja, GT, Gray and wright and bright were proper warriors
