I don't rate myself as a great football analyst but does anyone else feel that he seems really comfortable as a central defended in the 3 with the pace men on the outside? Or is it just that I've lived in fear of him being skinned by various sub-25 year olds over the past year or so?

He was a central defender for Pompey, in fact he was playing there for them when we went down there last day of the season before he signed for us

I agree with your Richards post Patrick although I'm yet to see a Wardy diving header. JW has so much experience and is quick enough in bursts but just look at (the soon to be sainted Munoz) and you can see what he might come up against on the wing.

Said this a few days ago… Ward was ‘the boss’ we have been lacking on the pitch for months. He organises the line, encourages, is tactically aware, and he may have lost some pace, I can’t remember him losing any aerial duels on Saturday. Between him, Anderson and Richard’s - the defence looked solid Edited by VinceHilaire (26 Feb 2024 7.36pm)

Didn’t Ward score a diving header away at Chelsea a few seasons back?

There was a Ward diving header a few years ago which proved to be the winner v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Originally posted by thetopgeezer

OG's style of pressing - which will include centre halves doing more than standing on the half way line when in possession - is also not ideal for a 34 year old turning 35 near the start of next season. That said, he has done well inside. Not exposed by pacey wingers who twist and turn both ways. He also dealt well with some of the dangerous crosses Everton put in.

He will do for the rest of the season though the right side CB in a three is Andersens favourite berth . Im hoping we can find a 20 year old Damo to play in the centre

I actually suggested a few weeks ago when we lost MG to injury that Wardy would do a good job as a centre back. When he was injured we started conceding a lot of goals as even though he isn’t the quickest he is a great defender, puts his body on the line and a good defensive header of the ball.We now look more sold from set pieces now he is in the back three. He is far from finished, doing a great job for us, a Palace legend !!
