There was a detailed analysis yesterday on Sky of Glasner’s preferred methodology together with video examples of teams he has previously managed.
The system involved 3 at the back with the 2 full backs pushed further on, 2 central midfield players and 3 forwards playing within a few yards of each other looking to interlink quickly when in possession.
I’m wondering if this suits our current squad,
1) Mitchell doesn’t seem to have the skill set to play left wing back
2) Huge demands are placed on the 2 central midfield players and in many games there are risks of being outnumbered in there by many Premier League teams.Wharton and Lerma noticeably tired last night around the 70 minute mark.
3) Where does Eze fit in to this system? He doesn’t defend enough to be one of the midfield 2 and has looked uncomfortable when pushed into the front 3.
4) The system involves the 3 defenders on occasions aggressively pushing forward to supplement the midfield winning the ball higher up the field.I would have doubts that this would suit Anderson, Ward and Richards although Guehi could probably adapt.
Anderson and Ward don’t have the pace to recover if they lose the ball and Richards has looked uncomfortable when stepping into midfield.
5) The system requires the front 3 to work really hard pressing from the front and, again, I’m not sure it suits our current players.

In conclusion I think I think it’s too early to make the transition to the new system with the players at our disposal unless we make tweaks e.g 352 where Eze plays as the most advanced of 5, but then where does Olise play?
If you retain the 3 up front you have to shoehorn Eze in one of the roles.

This is an opinion as is obviously open to debate, but I think there would be teething problems if we move to rapidly to such system until we have had type to refine it and have the right players.

Is it a 3-4-3 or more of a 3-4-2-1 or even 5-2-3?

In any instance I'd guess the formation was a bit like below and I'd suggest the following ignoring injuries etc for now:

GK: Johnstone
RWB: Munoz/Clyne
CB: Guehi/Andersen/Richards/Ward/Tomkins/Holding
CB: Guehi/Andersen/Richards/Ward/Tomkins/Holding
CB: Guehi/Andersen/Richards/Ward/Tomkins/Holding
LWB: Mitchell/Schlupp
CM: Wharton/Hughes/Lerma
CM: Wharton/Hughes/Lerma
CF: Eze/Olise/Edouard/Franca
CF: Eze/Olise/Edouard/Franca
ST: JPM

I'm sure there are plenty of variations of that others can and will knock up plus I've probably forgotten players but just reflects my initial thinking!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

3-4-3 I can see Andersen being the ball playing centre half. Similar to what Conte did to Luiz at Chelsea.

GK (Johnstone or Henderson) it is a toss of the coin I wonder who he will pick

LCB (Marc Guehi)
CB (Joachim Andersen)
RCB (Chris Richards)

LWB (Tyrick Mitchell)
DM (Adam Wharton)
DM (Jefferson Lerma)
RWB (Daniel Munoz) playing RWB we will probably see the best of Munoz very good going forward

CAM (Eberechi Eze)
False 9/ST (Jordan Ayew)
CAM (Michael Olise)

With Olise out for a long time Ayew will probably play in Olise's place and that will leave either Edouard or Mateta playing up front. Can Edouard do well under Glasner?

It isn't 343 its 3421 which is different the full backs play much higher, and the two have a much freer role which would suite Eze and Olise, if they are still here, i the the LWB is the most important buy, Mitchell is not attack minded enough, Doucoure and Wharton would be superb with Lerma and Ozoh as back up, and no contracts given to Schlupp, Hughes, Clyne, Tomkins, Jairo and Ferguson, with a one year extension for Ward

I understand what you're saying about 3421, but the analysis last night focused on Glasner and 343 with 3 front players pressing closely and interlinking quickly.
The point I'm making is that we would have to tweak the system to properly accomodate Eze.

any decent managers will first see what resources they have and pick a formation that best works for them.

That was deBoer's issue - he picked the formation first, and look how that went.

I will be amazed if we play 3 CBs against Burnley on Sat

To coin an old SP phrase it will be an evolution not a revolution.

To counter a few of the points you made. I think Wharton and Lerma/CD are good enough. I'd be so bold to say that Wharton will be one of hte most covered CMs in the league by Xmas. But with AW, JL, CD, DO we've got 4 decent CM's.

Ebz and Olise would be fine flanking JPM, Ebz would naturally tuck in more and Olise drift wider. We are at our most dangerous when these 2 interlink, so I'd be in favour of giving them as much flexibility as possible.

Pressing is jsut intelligent running. If the mandates is that OG plays a high press, the front 3 will do it (or they wont play).

He'll be pragmatic. We have a base of pretty good players, if he can add 10% extra concentration and strength of character that will be enough!

Eze is going to run into that a lot in his career and it’s part of why I’m not convinced he’ll end up at one of the big boys, despite his talent.

He’s a floating number 10 but hardly anyone can accommodate those anymore - even Vieira struggled to fit him in, and it’s much easier to justify at our level given the strength of the squad.

Jonny Ertl gave his assessment of his fellow countryman on the FYP podcast yesterday. He said Glasner's main strength has been his ability to adapt his formation and tactics to the strengths of the players available, so I don't necessarily think we'll see players pigeonholed into positions so he can play 3-4-3. It is a quandary though as Munoz looks much better as a wingback, but Mitchell doesn't really.

Agree but I think we're in a better position to play it this time round, we actually have ball playing CBs (Anderson/Guehi) along with an attacking RWB. LWB and the 3rd CB slot will be the biggest areas to work on in the summer, Mitchell doesn't know what he's doing that high up the pitch.

Never mind the formation Ollie, just sort out taking and defending corners. Top priority.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
