Just read we are the only premier league team to not start an under 21 player. Surely shows a lack of confidence and ambition in our younger players. And at a time when some of our first team players are under performing. Is this part of our/Roy's problem.

I suspect it shows 2 things:

Our manager is risk adverse and will always favour experience

We don't really have any U21's who are knocking on the door hard enough

You can knock as hard as you like on a door but if it's locked and bolted on the inside, you clearly aren't wanted.

Franca has had a few cameos, and whilst we are all willing him to be good he's giving hte ball away at an alarming rate.

Ozoh looks ok, and tones of potential, but he's hardly setting the world alight

Nor did Eze or Olise when they first played for us!

How do you give your youngsters confidence? Not by throwing them into lost causes as happened both at Newcastle and Arsenal and then blame them for not being up to it. You do what Klopp did yesterday with Bradley:
- you start him in his best position
- you give him an hour or so with good support.
- you give him well-done hug when he comes off.

What does Hodgson do?
- puts youngsters in square holes. Ahamada is NOT a right winger or right wing back.

IMO, if we gave Ozoh a run of starts he would soon show that he's a better option that either Hughes or Schlupp (and quite possibly Lerma as well).

Unfortunately, Hodgson can't think beyond what he sees as his experienced players.

But Eze and Olise also had reasonable/lots of experience in the championship.

Franca is miles away from that level.

And that's not his fault. Its SP/DF's fault. If it was Brighton Franca would have been bought and loaned straight out to get regular game time.

Ozoh also would hugely benefit from a season in the championship.

I'm not saying there is no blame with Roy, but Franca especially is so unbelievably raw and the stakes at present are so unbelievably high.

The biggest issue at the club is the lack of a joined up strategy. Board buying players that either we don't need or are not ready. Its a mess.

P.S. Conor Bradley, couldn't agree more. But lets remember he played 40 games for Bolton last year, scooping every club award and the EFL trophy. Franca has started what 12 games in his career.

AS you say both Eze and Olise had reasonable Championship experience and but they still needed a fair amount of time with us before they became regular starters.

I agree with you regarding Franca. He should have been loaned out.

As for Ozoh, I don't think it would take many games for him to show he can contribute more than either Hughes or Schlupp. He was good when he came on at the Etihad for the last hour of that game and there aren't many tougher places for your PL baptism than there (yes I know he'd had a few minutes as a sub previously) but he was solid in Manchester. IMHO, neither Hughes nor Schlupp are good enough and I don't see playing Ozoh instead of one of them would weaken our first XI.

The stakes may be high but we are bombing anyway so why not try Franca etc.
The young players can surprise us all if they are backed by the management.
There is not much more to lose now to be honest.

The problem is Roy won't use the youngsters except to rest the senior players at the end of games, but he has also publicly said he won't loan them out either due to a lack of cover, so we have a Catch 22 whereby they need experience but they can't get it here or elsewhere. He could have started Franca and Ahamada in the cup, but he seemed to be using that as a dress rehearsal for Arsenal. For some reason Schlupp is now a right winger! Ebiowei has some experience at Championship level and is an actual right winger. He may not be the answer but we know poor old Jeff isn't. The reluctance to even give them a chance even when no other senior player in their position is fit is what bugs me. We literally had no fit senior wingers available for Arsenal or the Everton game and yet still our young wingers don't play.

Franca and Ozoh should have had a chance from the start.

We haven't scored in three games and have only scored more than one once in the last 11 games which, bizarrely, was away to City.

Schlupp started those games and he has one goal and two assists from 22 appearances this season. That is absolutely woeful for an attacker and we need to get out of this mentality that our forwards need to be judged on their defensive efforts.

What's the worst that would have happened if we'd started Franca in some of those games? We still would have lost?

Similar to Ozoh with Richards, a defender, starting in midfield while he languishes on the bench. I quite like Richards but he shouldn't be playing all these games in midfield for us.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

When you look at our performances in the U21 league over the past couple of seasons, this doesn't stack up at all.

To be the only club to fail to start an U21 player would suggest we're producing uniquely bad prospects compared with our peers, but the results at academy level suggest the complete opposite is true.

Similar To Rak-Sakyi then, who's been rewarded for his impressive loan with 0 starts and a total of 136 minutes in the league, despite the main contender for his position being injured for the first 2 months of the season.
