Not totally because in a few years' time the new electric furnace will be up and running, but the lost customers may not return. The UK loses its ability to produce its own virgin steel, the only G20 member not to be able to do so. £500 millions up the spout, a disaster for 3,000 families, a Brexit bonus for India and China's exports. Reduces the carbon footprint per ton by 80%. I thought saving the planet didn’t have a cost so half a billion and 3 k job losses is just collateral damage for saving the dolphins! Nothing to see here.

I drive past Port Talbot a few times a month. A strange town, totally dominated by the steelworks. It's not just the direct job losses. It'll massively impact local shops, services and suppliers. No-one is going to wait around for a new massive industry to become established. They have mouths to feed and bills to pay. But they won't be able to relocate, because house prices will tumble to a new low. And action to mitigate this could have been undertaken a long time ago. Poor b'stads. I disengage, I turn the page.

I drive past Port Talbot a few times a month. A strange town, totally dominated by the steelworks.
It's not just the direct job losses. It'll massively impact local shops, services and suppliers.
No-one is going to wait around for a new massive industry to become established. They have mouths to feed and bills to pay. But they won't be able to relocate, because house prices will tumble to a new low.
And action to mitigate this could have been undertaken a long time ago. Poor b'stads.

House prices were already low. With no supporting industry, house prices will sink further and no-one will be able to get out.
This is a truly massive c0ck-up by HMG in allowing this to happen, and I have no doubt they knew ages ago about Tata's plans. Stuff like this is planned a few years in advance by most multi-national businesses.

The irish Government put a heavy tax on old emissions vehicles. Meaning that if you bought a flash 2 litre Audi in 2006, it was soon worth a pittance....even with low mileage. Resale value of nearly nothing. A mechanic friend told me they were all being bought up and exported to Africa to work as Taxi's. Hence a government policy to reduce emissions merely moves them to a different part of the Sky. British Steel ? its surprising it lasted as long as it did. I am concerned about our steel production in relation to military needs, but our steel is just not competitive with China. It produces a massive amount cheaply. Self sufficiency wherever possible has to be a good thing in an uncertain world.
