He was a very good guitarist. In country, Chet Atkins was the king and Jerry Reed was right up there. Gallagher was a competent player, but his songs did not live up to his talent. This is a problem I have had with many of the best players. Their material is rather dull.

Yes there are some who are almost too good - Tommy Emmanuel for example or Mike Dawes whose acoustic version of Jump is astonishing. Gordon Giltrap was another I liked in the 70s although the sort of Mike Oldfield stuff he played wasn't my usual thing.

Mad as a box of frogs . . . Ritchie Blackmore
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Great shout out for Glen Campbell. My mum owned that massively-bought 20 Golden Greats LP and I was touched by some beautiful songs - By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Galveston and of course The Wichita Linesman. Written by genius songwriter Jimmy Webb. Talking of virtuoso guitarists not often spoken in the same sentence such as Page, Hendrix, Blackmore etc., I remember watching an incredible performance from Johnny Winters on the OGWT.

'In the heat and the rain - with whips and chains'. When heavy rock was both a little laughable yet somehow epic.

half the people, at the top of the music industry, have zero musical talent. Just neck, pushiness, networking, wealthy backers and a cutthroat attitude. Madonna being a case in point. I agree about Glen Campbell being good....he could play the bagpipes too. For me, a brilliant musician is somebody whose music shows much variety in style. Therefore Tom Waits is the GOAT. Without exaggerating, some acts have every tune that sounds the bleedin same. Edited by PalazioVecchio (07 Dec 2023 3.06pm)

you can get a bit sick of Rock & Pop all the time. Variety is the spice of life. Can i throw out a request for any modern Orchestral music.....ie Classical but post 1900. Stravinsky, obviously very important. But the fella below can also be amazing........Arvo Part.....and still alive. I believe the tune below was featured in the Oppenheimer movie. She bought me a Tommy Emmanuel CD many, many years ago and I don't think that I ever played it thinking that it was the usual rubbish. I must see if I've still got it

I used to go to Eel Pie Island in Twickenham every Sunday night where the resident band was The Yardbirds so I watched a young Eric Clapton every week followed by a young Jeff Beck when he left and Jimmy Page when Beck left
