I think a lot of us have been saying that for years, be careful what you wish for and all that. Charlton have hit levels of s***e we haven’t known for 50 years

Most of my Charlton mates are realistic they never wanted Curbishley to go, however there is a small but very vocal toxic group of fans who got their way.

The same group of idiots who drove the Belgium owner out of the club with threats and intimidation tactics. Commonsense tells you that if you force an owner out any potential new owner will run a mile which is exactly what happened, they have had cowboy owners since.

They hated the Belgium yet my mates told me he did fund the team and kept the club financially stable he was a mini Mike Ashley, not likeable but did not deserve the abuse.

Worth reading this about salaries at Charlton.

Absolutely spot on from Roy.

I don't know about anyone else but I have enjoyed the last 10 years in the premier league. And long may it continue!

There's a reason why most clubs dont take the cups serious these days. Premier league is your bread and butter. Unless you have a large squad like the top 6 Europe is a disaster for teams like us. Imagine we were in Europe with our injury list!

I think most fans understand we will never have a sustained period of success at a club with our budget. I've never heard one fan expecting us to challenge for a champions league place. Only 9 different clubs have played in it since it rebranded, the big six, Leeds, Newcastle and Leicester after a fluke season.

There's been plenty of clubs that have qualified for the europa, we're only a few players short of having a genuine chance of competing for a European place and with the spine of our squad and the talent we have, I'm disappointed we didn't strengthen and have a real go this season. Its all about timing with a club our size and this seemed like the perfect season to build, but we've stood still. If we're lucky enough to keep doucoure, Guehi, andersen, eze and Olise for another season and we have as bad a window as this summer then I'll be disappointed next year aswell.

Roy is just being a loyal servant.

No-one is clamouring that we move into the Champions League but one season in Europe before I die , would be much appreciated!

We are so close to being a very useful outfit and I think that is where the frustration comes from.

We have been here before…we showed no ambition in 91 and signed Gary Thompson instead of Rod Wallace. Leeds won the title and we went down two years later.

I am sure we all agree that we need a striker and right back - let’s see what January brings us.

Another way of looking at it is this is Roy just saying "this is as good as it gets", which with the finances being what they are seems an honest appraisal.
That said it seems only natural for any fan to think that after 11 seasons in the PL and an average finish of around 12th place, how it is that we always seem on the cusp of improving but fall short? "If only". There it is again.

Your recollection is a little bit awry there. We signed Garry (sic) Thompson in 1990 when Ian Wright broke his leg (twice). He represented us with enthusiasm and played his part in keeping us in the First Division. As I recall, he didn't play much in 1990/91, with Ian Wright back to fitness.

Looking at other clubs in that division and other leagues, I see
- Rob Street now at Cheltenham is on £88k a year
- Gordon on loan at Cambridge is on £161k
- Plange on loan at Carlisle is the top earner on £260k
- Balmer's on £156k on loan at Port Vale
- Hannam now at Stevenage is on £88k
- Phillips on loan at Wycombe is on £206k
- Goodman on loan at L2 Colchester is on £93k
- Boateng on loan to Dundee is on £98k
- Banks on loan to St Pauli in Germany (and sadly badly crocked) is on £239k and is one of the lowest paid in their squad!
- Obrien at Lyons is on £780k (nice move son).

These lads aren't doing bad are they?

Very understandable BUT before we try and achieve that we do need to ensure we have a squad strong enough to compete on both fronts. We certainly aren't there yet so Id love us to reach the position immediately below the Europa Conf league place this season and strengthen for a tilt at a European place next year or the year after.

Probably wishful thinking on my part but as long as we can keep our place in the PL, I'll be delighted.

As Hodgson rightly said in the FYP podcast, real fans are supporters not just fans. We supporters are Palace through and through and will support them whichever league we're in but it is nice being in the top one.
