it would help us defensively if we actually tried to defend crosses.

Coaching issues imo, across the academy.

Having watched it to see how our so called hopefuls for breaking into our first team performed it is clear they all have a long way to go. The biggest thing for me is as yet they are not working together well as a team, they are trying to show their own individual skills. Having said that to me one of the biggest culprits was Ebiowei and yet he demonstrated his exceptional skill levels with his goal. Ademola Ola-Adebomi continues to show great promise with his ability to put the ball in the net. Ozoh and Franca two other advanced prospects were just out muscled by more streetwise footballers. Interesting to watch with a critical eye with Premiership expectations in mind and maybe unfair but we are hoping for some of these boys to come through in the near future.COYP

The gap between pl2 and football league is massive. Everyone criticises the lack of youth, but the top 0.5% make it. The rest are unfortunately not good enough for the prem.

Arsenal lost 5-2 aswell and they have been a cat1 Academy longer and are more established at youth level than us

Exactly, those who believe we can survive on academy players-coming through the system in sufficient numbers to graduate to EPL level are deluded, that’s why we have to have better recruitment and be more effective investment in the transfer market.

The big question I have is over the whole concept of U21 football.

Does it prepare and develop players sufficiently for Senior football ?

This game was just another Men v Boys mismatch.

I may be sounding like a footballing Luddite, but didn't the old reserve teams football better prepare young players for the physical challenges of the game ?

The good old 'Football Combination'.
On occasions I used to watch our team at Selhurst Park on a Saturday when our 1st team was playing away.

I also have a recollection of seeing our Reserve team plough their furrow against Wimbledon at Plough Lane in midweek.

I suspect you have a very valid point.

Instead of Ademola, Ebiowei and Ozoh spending most of hte season playing against other good kids, I'd want to see them out on loan in the lower leagues.

I'd love to know the stats, but I bet a very tiny proportion of players come straight out of an academy into the prem with no other football experience.

Close to home but Gallagher and Guehi come to mind, of players who went out on loan at an early age. Both of those seamed to have a career plan, Guehi going to Swansea after having worked with Cooper, and then Gallager moved up quickly as he proved himself, Charlton, Swansea, WBA, Palace.

I've always wondered if we have a plan for the young players we bring in. Never really feels like it. Ebiowei is a good example. WTF are we doing with him now?

Franca another example. With Olise now fit, the chances of him playing are very limited. If that was Brighton he would have signed 1 day, and gone out on loan the next.

The Football Combination was great why did they scrap it.

A genuine reserve team, often playing against top sides.

If a player was under-performing he would be dropped into the reserve side, and vice-versa.

Memories.
