just surprising it wasn't another mystery car crash. The guy did well, from selling lemonade on the streets. And yet, to me, will always ne remembered for the bizarre Michael Jackson statue outside Fulham's ground Edited by Forest Hillbilly (02 Sep 2023 9.10am)

He was a crook who couldn't accept that he was responsible for Dodi and Diane's security and appointed a drunk driver and a bodyguard who failed to do his job.

He is not someone I particularly liked, but I did feel very sorry for him. He suspected that something was fishy about his son's death, and he might well have been right about that. Some of his bitterness might have been about not feeling accepted in the higher echelons of British society as a foreigner, but his many millions should have soothed that. In the end, he had to bury his son and see his dream of being associated with royalty destroyed. I'm sure there is a lesson to be learned in there somewhere.

I thought he worked for the Ritz. It is inevitable that he would be blamed, and his reputation tainted, if there had been a conspiracy. These things cannot be simply taken on face value. For years, people accepted that Lee Harvey Oswald's gun was recovered from the book depository, until it turned out that it wasn't actually his gun.

Err who do you think owned the Ritz? Al Fayed chose this man to be her driver.

Yes, of course, he owned The Ritz in Paris and Paul was an employee. That is not in question, but Paul's alleged alcoholism certainly is.

That is not in question, but Paul's alleged alcoholism certainly is. What happened was a tragedy and I'm sure Al Fayed never dreamed it would happen. That said Al Fayed used the relationship as a giant PR exercise it was no coincidence that they stayed at the Ritz. The Press were told when and where the couple would be by Al Fayed's people and this only stoked up the media circus. The bodyguard was the only person wearing a seatbelt and he failed to notice that the driver had a drink. The press pack also have to take some of the blame but Al Fayed if he was honest with himself must share a little of the responsibility for appointing the wrong people to look after the couple. As for the crook comment that is why he never got a British passport. Edited by Badger11 (03 Sep 2023 1.46pm)
