Is anyone else aware of what is happening in Israel at the moment? It's not receiving a lot of attention but is actually quite a crisis and also a pointer about what can happen when populism takes too firm a grip. The Netanyahu government is in the process of passing new laws which will severely restrict the ability of their Supreme Court to function. There are fears that the already authoritarian regime will become a dictatorship. This has sparked widespread protests on a scale not seen before, including from military reservists who say they will no longer serve. Civil war is feared. I know how the Guardian is regarded here, but this makes interesting reading:- As I will be in Jerusalam during the first week of September, during a trip planned before this all blew up, I am taking a particular interest in what's going on. That it has lessons both for us here, but more particularly about the USA, makes it even more interesting.

So if this was a socialist government or left leaning party doing this would it be any different. There are current examples around the world but replace left with Muslim in some cases and it’s absolutely no different. It doesn’t of course make this correct but as you mention the USA are the present party not changing laws to suit their protection and wants ?

Netanyahu of course will be looking to get his corruption charges dropped.

Authoritarian government, let alone dictatorship, is unwelcome whichever brand of politics is involved. I am unaware of any moves in the USA which resemble this in any way at all. Maybe you can explain what you think they are.

So what solution do Wisbech and Steeleye have for their problem with Jewish governance of Israel?

Almost totally lacking in Christianity - Such high levels of Crime & anti social behaviour that the American Embassy just issued a warning to their citizens ''its not safe to walk the streets of Dublin'' by contrast, Israel sounds like a paradise. At least that State still seems to not hate its own citizens. Lots of people slag off Israel but at least it's Patriotic toward its own people. Unlike much of Western Europe. Rotherham would have never happened to vulnerable Israeli girls. Edited by PalazioVecchio (30 Jul 2023 9.10pm)

60% of the country voted for the current Irish government. You might not like it but its not a dictatorship. You'll get to vote them out in two years. Edited by corkery (30 Jul 2023 10.24pm)

I don't have any problem with it. I don't live there and have no intention of doing so. I am just visiting to see the historical sites. Something I last did more than 30 years ago. The Israeli people do though. It also serves as a warning. When particular factions gain undue influence within coalitions, extreme politics can become entrenched.

The most depressing country to be in right now.

It's many years since I was there, but from all you suggest it sounds a great deal better. You have some very strange ideas about what is happening in Israel. No-one can surely approve of a situation in which an authoritarian regime is threatening to overturn the rule of law and become an effective dictatorship. This is widely opposed by the people. Only a small proportion are supporters. Jewish organisations in the USA are opposed. Doctors are striking and a general strike is threatened. Reservists are saying they won't serve to defend the government. This is a very serious rejection by the people as a whole, of a government in hock to a small number of reactionaries. This is seen as a government that does hate the majority of its citizens and is certainly not a paradise at the moment.

Edited by corkery (30 Jul 2023 10.24pm) we may have voted for the feckers......but we certainly didnt vote for their policies. That Government seems to be taking their Lead from the EU.....not anybody else. they also ignored the spirit of the 2004 referendum, bigtime. Forcing us to re-vote on the Lisbon treaty.....another act of tyranny. Israel looks good by comparison.

Everybody is always hating on Israel. But considering all the persecutions suffered by the Jews under the Caesars and in medieval Europe....not to mention more recently......you can hardly blame them for wearing a stab-vest. and even today, they are being persecuted out of much of North Africa. Not having an easy time in France either. Israel is mostly a Desert....without Oil. Is it really worth all the bloodshed.?....on both sides ? Religion is mostly an incitement to violence.....on the West Bank, The Shankill Road Belfast or the border of India/pakistan. Edited by PalazioVecchio (30 Jul 2023 11.27pm)
