Star spangled banner, uber alles, Marsellaise all fine, and land of my fathers, and the scots have gone for flower of Scotland over Scotland the brave lately, but lots of countries have utterly obscure unmemorable anthems so I thought I'd start a pathetic thread on alternative tunes for these countries, bit like when Billy Connolly said UK should play the Archers theme.

Netherlands - Van der Valk theme

Denmark - Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen (preferably Harry Secombe's version)

Spain - Eh viva Espana

Greece - Zorba

If anybody has suggestions for Belgium, Canada, Sweden, New Zealand or elsewhere that would be nice. And I'd probably replace Advance Australia Fair with the theme from 'Skippy'.

Sweden just needs an ABBA song - I don't know - Waterloo, SuperTrooper?
New Zealand - The Haka, and everyone has to do it.
Canada - I'm a Lumberjack.
Belgium should have three other ones sung in succession. Maybe France and Holland plus a new EU one.
Japan - should have Captain Sensible, or Born in Japan.
Ireland - nothing compares to you.
France needs a retreating or surrendering song. I surrender by Celine Dion.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

in Ireland, practically nobody understands the words of our National Anthem. My own level of the language is pretty good....and i will confess to being totally stumped....

By my reckoning, we are the only team in the World Cup that doesnt really get the meaning of our national anthem. In the manner that you sing.....

Sinne Fianna Fáil,
atá faoi gheall ag Éirinn,
Buíon dár slua
thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,
Faoi mhóid bheith saor
Seantír ár sinsear feasta,
Ní fhágfar faoin tíorán ná faoin tráill.
Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil,
Le gean ar Ghaeil, chun báis nó saoil,
Le gunna-scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar,
Seo libh canaig' amhrán na bhFiann

------------------------------------------

google reported to me that the most famous foreign song to English schoolkids is Frere Jacques.....you sing it, and havent really a clue what its all about

It's Trouper, not Trooper.

Super Trouper is a registered trademark for a range of lights designed to follow a performer or other entity on a stage, in an arena, in a racetrack etc, whereas a trooper is a soldier

The Italian one, Fratelli d'Italia, has to be one of the most random ones out there - you cannot tell when the lyrics are supposed to start, then they suddenly stop for several bars, then off it goes like a marching song again.

Stick to 'Just One Cornetto'

Considering Italy invented opera and has produced some fantastic musicians and arias you'd think they'd come up with a decent NA.

some super duper suggestions - the Irish one is strangely tricky though there is a song which goes: "mi name is Seamus, I'm awful famous ..." which is better than anything by Dana, the Nolans or their irritating jig music.
